DIY Christmas Wreath

December is here! I am so excited for all the crafts, food, lights, and decorations that come with this month. It is truly a beautiful time of year. We have decked our halls and are ready for the season.

In all our preparation, I am aiming to keep the “stuff” simpler this year. It is easy to get stressed and overwhelmed, and I don’t want that to take over the joy and peace that should come with Christmas. I didn’t put out half of our decor, and the stuff is simpler and sweet. In this quest to stay rooted in being about less this year, I made a simple Christmas wreath for our front door.

One of my sisters lives in Arkansas and has horses, chickens, goats, and cows. It’s the real deal country living. She gave me a few old chicken feeders (when they were cleaning out their barn), and I have been waiting for a way to use them.

I used a chicken feeder as the base of my wreath. I love the rustic, recycled simplicity that this wreath helped create. I bet you could use this same idea with a wire wreath frame.

I took a bunch of Christmas tree trimmings that I gathered when we cut down our tree, and broke off branches so there were smaller, thinner pieces ready to be easily bended in my chicken feeder.

I simply weaved the branches in and out of my frame. When one branch ended, I pushed that branch down towards the base of the chicken feeder and weaved another one on top. I didn’t use any twist-ties, glue, or pins to hold the branches in place. They simply stayed by tucking them behind the metal or previous branches.

Once I had branches all the way to the top of my feeder, I checked to see if there were any bare spots that I needed to tuck in some smaller branches. I then used my clippers to trim my wreath to have a more uniform shape by cutting off some longer pieces.

I didn’t want my wreath to scratch up my front door from the rough metal prongs hitting the door, so I used duck tape to cover the ends on the back. My wreath was then done, and I hung it up!

I love the simplicity of this wreath, but you could easily add some red twig berries or a bow to spice it up and add a bit of color.

Recycled Wreath

Decorating your home can be expensive. The constant changing of holidays and seasons could make you go broke with all the cute options of stuff to buy. I love to decorate for the holidays and adding slight changes to represent the current season but have come up with some frugal ways to make it possible. I want to show you one of my tricks today with my new summer wreath.

I created a simple rustic wreath for our old front door. My wreath was simple in color and design because the door was a bright cherry red. They looked good together. After moving and trying to put that same wreath on our now dark burgundy door, it just didn’t give the same warm feel. The wreath got lost and looked old and bland.

I decided to spice it up with some new elements to create a new wreath while recycling parts of the old wreath. By using parts of the old wreath, I kept the cost down for a new wreath. Here you can see my old wreath with the new flowers I bought to help spice it up.

The frist thing I did was to strip my old wreath of everything I had added to it. I pulled off all the flowers and kind of created two piles out of the stuff. One pile was elements I thought I was going to throw away and the other was stuff I wanted to try to use again.

Next, I pulled off all my fake flowers off the long stems they came on.

I placed them onto my wreath mixed in with the burlap elements from my old wreath that I wanted to try to use again. I played around with the placement of all the different pieces.

Once I had them laid out in a way I liked, I pulled out my hot glue gun and started hot glueing them all into place.

After they were all hot glued, my new wreath was complete! I think the new flowers cost about $8.00 all together, so I got a whole new wreath that matched my flower pots and taste perfectly for $8.00.

I love the way the front entrance of our house now looks. The new wreath and flower pots really helped spruce up our front porch. What about you? Have you ever destroyed something you created to create something new?

DIY Feather Wreath

I am so excited to share today’s Project Spotlight with you! A few weeks ago, I fell in love with a white feather wreath at Target. I stood there staring at it, trying to decide if I should buy it. It cost $19.99, and I decided to pass it by and try to make it myself.

Today I am going to show you the technique I came up with to make this DIY feather wreath, and it only cost about $4.00 to make! That is less than 1/4 the price at Target, and it really was so easy!

Here is what you will need to buy: one styrofoam wreath and white craft feathers. I already had my hot glue gun with glue sticks, but if you do not have those items, you will have to buy them as well. I got my foam wreath (normally $4.47) at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. I also got my white craft feathers there, and they were 30% off this week. So, the normal $1.99 a package of white craft feathers cost me about $1.30 each. I completely used both packs.

I started by adding a big drop of hot glue to my wreath.

I added a feather and pressed my thumb on the spine of the feather to prevent getting burned. I just want to briefly say here, I am so sorry for my messed up/old finger nail polish in all these pictures. How embarrassing. 🙂

I went about five or six feathers across the styrofoam of the wreath.

Those feathers were my first row. I then started my next row about an inch lower on the styrofoam. This allowed for lots of overlap but spread the feathers out a little, so I didn’t need as many.

I found that the five or six feathers across allowed for some “wrapping” on the sides of the wreath. They started to go towards the back but also the back still had a bare streak, so as not to waste feathers that would not be seen. Play with the amount of feathers you need. Depending on the size of your ring of styrofoam and feathers you may need more or less. The important part is to just cover the sides well because you don’t want any styrofoam to be seen at any angle your wreath ends up being displayed and seen.

You then just keep adding rows and rows of feathers doing the same steps until you are about to where you started.

From there you do your best holding/bending the first row of feathers back so you can stick glue in there behind them and glue those final rows. It was a bit tricky managing it on my own, but it can be done!

After you get those last rows done, you are done! You have just created a professional looking wreath for less than 1/4 the price!

I love it!! I think it looks Christmasy yet also wintery. Even after the rest of your Christmas decorations come down, this pretty wreath could stay up till the spring!

I think these wreaths would make amazing Christmas gifts for friends or family. I think they would also make fun hostess gifts or a nice wedding/house-warming present. The ideas are endless, and they are gorgeous and CHEAP!

I stuck my wreath up on my mantle with a little star I found at the Dollar Tree last week. Today we are getting all of our Christmas decorations down out of the attic and I can’t wait to really deck my halls with this beauty! I’m sure I will be back to show you my results!
