Quick And Easy DIY Felt Bunny

April 2, 2015 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

felt_bunny_toySpring is finally showing its beautiful self in Indiana. We’ve had trouble getting all our school work done because WE. JUST. WANT. TO. BE. OUTSIDE.

Can you relate? I literally have dropped my chores and let the laundry pile up-to go walk in the creek in the backyard with the kids. It’s been amazing!

Now that we are feeling some spring, I realize Easter is just days away. There is nothing like the pressure of having to pull a good, meaningful, fun gift together quickly. You’re in luck! These felt stuffed bunnies were super simple. I literally made all four last night with supplies I had on hand. Now I can throw them in my kids Easter baskets with some candy and other little things, and they have a sentimental, homemade gift that took barely any time. You can do it too!

I started with taking a piece of felt and folding it in half. I then cut out a bunny silhouette. I just eye balled my bunny, but I know there are probably images you could google, print out, cut out, trace onto the felt and then cut out. I cut through both layers of the felt at the same time to make sure I had two images of the bunny that were exact.

cut_bunnyI then did a quick stitch with my sewing machine, but I left an opening at the base of my bunny. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you could do a simple blanket stitch by hand like I did on this plush bear.

Also, I added an extra piece of felt to two of my bunnies backsides to make them a tooth fairy pillow as well.

spring_craftNext, I stuffed the bunnies with some Poly-fil and used a paintbrush to help stuff the Poly-fil up into the ears.

felt_stuffed_bunnyI decided to not try to stick the stuffed bunny back into my sewing machine, but I instead used some embroidery floss and hand stitched the bunnies close.

DIY_bunnyThe final step was to hot glue a little felt ball onto the bottom to act as a tail. I toyed with sewing buttons on or embroidering a face on the front of the bunny. In the end, I decided I liked the simple look. You could also paint faces on your bunny or even give them away plain, and let your kids decorate them!

I think they would be cute with little pipe cleaner whiskers, felt legs sticking out, and even googly eyes glued on. This might even be a fun craft for a party. There are lots of possibilities, if we use our imaginations!

spring_kids_craftHas spring sprung where you are? I have heard we might get another snow storm and aren’t in the clear of cold temps yet, but for now, we are loving the sunshine! I hope you too are being able to get outside, create, and imagine the possibilities!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I will be back again soon!

DIY Felt Initial

August 31, 2014 By Erica Deuel 3 Comments

Disclosure: I received this Sizzix machine and die cut for free, but all feelings and opinions are my own. This post does include affiliate links.

DIY_felt_flower_initialI love felt. I do a lot of projects with it, but I have always cut it by hand. At times I have found it therapeutic, but at other times it can get to feel tedious cutting the same patterns over and over.

At Haven this year, I had the privileged to meet a company that makes a machine that cuts felt for you. What!? My mind was blow. This Sizzix machine has quickly become one of my best friends.

sizzix_machineI am a basic crafter. Having lots of tools to store, clean, figure out intimidates me. Part of why I have just been content with cutting felt by hand is I like the simplicity, but I have to say this machine is so easy to understand.

felt_flower_craftIt was simple and so quick. I placed my felt on top of my diecut and used the cutting pads to sandwich the two together. I then cranked the lever while steadying it with my other hand, and out came my design.

felt_cutting_machine

felt_flowerIt was so quick. I was giddy at the perfection of the cut and the amount of time I was saving, so I took a picture to send to my fellow crazy crafter friend, Erin. If you like my Sizzix machine creation, you will lover her feather mobile as well.

easy_way-To_cut_feltI cut a bunch of different colors of flowers out. This machine will also emboss and cut paper so there are lots of possibilities.

felt_flowersAfter I had a bunch of different colors cut, I started playing with styling. I used the different petals and colors to form my own flowers. I was careful to space them out by size and color so my “R” was nice and balanced.

monogram_initialThe next step was to sew the flower petals together. I used a needle and thread to sew each flower together. I did a mix of just sewing the petals together and using a bead to center on top of the flower to sew together. I like the mix of the plain flower with the beaded ones. The contrast added another level of depth and texture. After all the flowers were sewn, I picked one at a time up and hot glued it onto my “R”.

Sizzix_felt_flowersI ended up spray painting the “R” with rustoleum spray paint to have a dark, fun background to contrast with my bright flowers. I also ended up gluing some lime green petals in random spots for another punch of color.

felt_lettter_craft

DIY_felt_flower_letterI love the way this felt initial came out. It is a baby gift for my soon to be born niece. I paired it with my Heart Embroidery Hoop. I love giving personalized handmade gifts. What about you?

LIttle_girl_wall_decorI am so excited to use my machine again soon. I now want to create an initial for my little girl, and I have lots of other ideas bouncing around.

Do you love felt too? Are you a basic crafter  and hesitant to get all the gadgets? This machine is a gadget that I’d recommend because it’s so simple and such a huge time saver.

I’d love to hear from you! Please leave me a comment or talk with me on Instagram. Fall is just arriving and it’s a great time for us to break out all our felt projects as the weather gets cooler.

DIY Tractor Garland

July 14, 2014 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

DIY_John_Deere_garland

Do you have a little boy that loves tractors?

There is a sweet boy in my life who lights up for the big John Deere’s. When his mom decided to decorate his room, she playfully pitched several concepts to him. Superheros? No. Transformers? Nope. Sports? No way. It was tractors all the way. So, she has embraced his love of those bright, neon green machines and his room is getting a special makeover with tractor decorations. Can you imagine how much that little boy feels loved and valued? I love it.

I wanted to help, so I made this little felt garland to help decorate the walls. It would be so cute over the dresser, his bed, or even pulled out for a birthday party celebration. Although it was easy and cheap, it was a bit time-consuming. You can do it though! If you have a tractor lover in your life too, you should give this a try!

I started with printing off a picture of a John Deere Tractor and pulling out felt that were the same colors. I eye-balled cutting out different pieces with scissors. Once I had pieces of a tractor that I liked, I used those pieces as a stencil to cut out a few more tractors till I had a small stack of tractor pieces ready to put together.

pieces_of_tractor

felt_tractor

crafting_tractorsI put my tractor stack aside and cut out some simple triangles and the letters of his name to add a special personalization to his garland. I loved mixing the bronze sparkle with the felt to add another texture and a bit of snaze :). The bronze also reminded me of dirt, which goes well with a tractor. This sweet four-year old boy probably won’t get the meaning of those details, but it was fun to create and think through this design.

felt_lettersI sewed the letters to my triangles and as much of the tractor pieces together as I could. Once I had the tractors and name pieces ready, I sewed them all together to create a long attached garland and used hot glue to add some final touches to my tractor.

felt_tractors

tractor_garland_tutorialI love how it turned out. For this garland, I sewed the tractors facing all the same direction. I think it would also be cute to space them out differently and have some tractors going the opposite direction.

Do you know a child who loves tractors and all things outdoors with bugs and dirt? I love embracing my kids’ interests, but taking it to the level of decorating their room is not always easy for me. So proud of this sweet boy’s mom and how she loves her son SO well!

Today, use your imagination to find a way to go that extra mile to let your kids know and FEEL they are loved treasures in your life. Have a great day!

How to use Felt and Yarn in the Spring

April 1, 2014 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

spring_craftsWhen you think of yarn and felt, do you think of their use more for in the fall and winter?

Although I think they are perfect for the winter months, I would also argue they are great for spring and summer as well. Maybe this makes me a rule breaker. Will you break the rules with me too?

As I was crafting this week, I realized my two new projects both used what most may consider “winter” craft supplies.

If you use some bright, spring and summery colors, I think amazing crafts can use felt and yarn year round. Let me prove my case to you with some pictures.

I took this stick from my backyard and spray-painted it a light pink. I then simply sanded it a little and wrapped some yarn around it to add another punch of color and texture. How cute can this idea be paired with some other spring decor?

spring_decorThis week I shared my DIY Felt Hydrangea over on my friend Heidi’s blog. If you too have a black thumb, you might want to check it out!

DIY_felt_hydrangeaI never get sick of seeing yarn pom poms. There are some awesome tutorials on pinterest, if you have been wanting to make a few. I simply spruced up the bouquet from my winter mantel with a few spring color pom poms.

yarn_pom_pomsIf you need some cheap wall decor, you can make a simple DIY Pennant Flag or a fun character with yarn hair like our Fluttershy My Little Pony.
