Felt Flower Tutorial

February 5, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

DIY_felt_fairy_wandsFor the love of felt!

I am all about color. I have found felt and flower projects are a simple way to add that pop of color to an ordinary project or room.

To make this felt flower, I simply cut eight petals out of felt. Each petal was roughly 2.5″ long.

felt flower suppliesI used wool felt balls as the center of my flower and hot glued one petal at a time on to it. After I had one row of petals around my felt ball, I simply hot glued another row behind.

DIY_felt_flowerOnce both layers of petals were glued in place, I turned my flower head over. I used sharp scissors and snipped a slice in the felt ball. I created a little envelope fold by doing this. I placed hot glue and then a dowel rod into the hole. After holding the rod in place for a few minutes to let it set, I let it go and had the base of my flower complete!

After I created a few of these flowers, I decided add one more touch to give it a more finished look. I simply used some chiffon left over from making my chiffon flowers and hot glued a little of it in place and wrapped it all the way down my dowel rod. I used a little more glue to hold it in place at the bottom, and it was done!

Flet_flower_tutorial

Felt_flower_tutorialI think these flowers are so cute by themselves in a vase! As I had them posed in a vase in our dinning room, my daughter came by and wanted to smell them and started waving them around saying she was tinker bell. She is a blast. She gave me the idea that these sweet flowers could be sweet party favors for a fairy birthday party. There are so many possibilities, if we use our imaginations!

If you like this felt flower, I have two other designs you might enjoy! Take a look at this felt flower and my burlap flower design that uses wool felt balls in the center.

felt_flowersFor the next three people that buy one of my Spoonful Tribe Craft Kits, I will place one of these flowers in your box. How would you use your flower? So, hurry, click here and buy your kit right now to ensure you get one of these flowers in your kit!

DIY Felt Pennant

January 15, 2014 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

DIY_felt_pennant_flagLove is all around. As the song says. 🙂 Sometimes I do better at being love than others, but I am continually inspired by what love can and does do.  Just tonight did I get to celebrate the first birthday of a sweet boy in foster care with another family. The love they are pouring into that sweet boy is inspiring. They are being love. No matter his history or how long they have him, they are loving him well. I am encouraged.

Today, I want to encourage you. No matter where you are in your life. No matter what your ministry and life may entangle. We can all be love to those around us. To the mailman that delivers our mail in the rain. To the cashier that looks worn out and tired. To our kids as we fold their clothes and wash their dishes. There are many ways to be love.

I made this simple felt pennant to decorate our mantel for Valentine’s Day, but after Valentine’s Day I will probably hang it in my daughter’s bedroom. You can take this concept and create the same inspirational pennant or be inspired and make it your own with a quote or word that stands out to you.

valentines_day_mantelThe first thing to do is to get some felt. I used several smaller squares for my words and lettering and bought one of the larger rectangle pieces to use as my pennant base.

felt_craft_suppliesThe first thing I did to create my pennant was to fold the large felt piece in half (long horizontally) and make a slit in the middle. I then drew lines from the corners on the opposite side to where the slit cut was and cut along those lines.

cutting_felt

felt_pennant_flagI now had my base pennant. I then wrote a quick script of love and tried to cut my letters out similarly to what my pen script looked like. It was not perfect, but I think my letters came out fun and work. You could cut letters out like I did here to create your own stencil or you could also use an actual stencil to trace letters to cut. I think felt stickers would even be cute! There are lots of ways to create this look. Be inspired by my design and make one on your own! Once I had my letters, I pinned them in place and used my sewing machine to attach them to my base gray pennant.

diy_felt_pennant

DIY_felt_pendentI thought it was pretty as is, but it didn’t look quite complete to me. I added a red yarn pom-pom at the top and used washi tape to attach a metal stick to my pennant to make it more of a flag. I then simply propped it up on my mantel, and it was done!

valentines_day_mantel_decorationsI love how it all comes together. I think my mantel looks pretty, yet not all “hello it’s Valentine’s Day” tacky decor. I used some of my felt flowers to add some more color, but I love the simplicity in my winter wreath, pom pom flowers and burlap. I also just could NOT pack away those fun twinkle lights with the rest of my Christmas decor. Tomorrow, I will have another DIY post with an element from this mantel PLUS there is a sneak peek at an item in next month’s Spoonful Tribe in this picture. **Hint, hint…that is coming next week! I am so excited to show it to you!

valentines_day_decorThank you all so much for stopping by. I hope you are having a wonderful week!

DIY Felt Hair Bow

January 6, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

DIY_felt_hair_clipImagine walking down the hair bow aisle at one of your favorite stores and realizing that you can make some of the same pretty items that are marked for $5+ for just mere pennies. You can. You don’t have to imagine it. You can create this simple felt hair bow quickly.

Pieces of felt are about $0.20/$0.25 a piece at craft stores. If you get a few colorful sheets, a handful of buttons, and pull out your hot glue gun, thread, needle, scissors, and some clips you are ready to start a masterpiece (or at least a little fun piece :)).

felt_hairbow_suppliesThe first thing you need to do is to cut out four circles that are the same size. I eye balled mine, but you could easily trace the rim of a cup onto your felt and cut that out to get a perfect circle that you can be sure to have four of equal’s in shape and size.

cutting_felt_circlesNext step, is to fold your circles in half and place them intertwined with each other as shown in the picture below. This step may look harder than it actually is. Have you ever folded a cardboard box top closed where each flap had one corner sticking up? It’s kinda like the same concept. With all four of your felt circles folded in half, stack them while rotating each one so they have that intertwined affect. By the time you have all four folded and pinched in your hand it should look like a complete circle with half of each felt piece facing up. It gives your flower a fun 3D kind of texture.

creating_felt_flowerI then used my thread and sewed stitches all around that caught all four circles and bound them together.

felt_flower_tutorialBefore completing knotting my thread and cutting the threads off, I cut out a scalloped circle and sewed that and a button on top of all my first ugly stitches.

felt_flowerI then knotted the thread and cut it off my felt flower. I wanted to add another color to my flower, so I cut some leaf petals and hot glued them onto my clip. I then simply glued the felt flower on as well, and it was done!

felt_hair_bowOne of the beauties of knowing how to create these felt hair bows is you can make as many as you want and personalize them to each child or outfit and not break your bank account. Giving hair bows is a fun personal gift and you can also use the same steps of creating this felt flower to make a bunch of flowers and glue onto a wreath, sew onto a shirt or bag, or even glue a small one onto a greeting card. There are lots of possibilities, if you just use your imagination!

felt_flowersDo you love felt too? All these cold winter days make me crave a good felt project. Something like this would be an easy Valentines gift to make your little girl or use as party favors!

What would you do with some felt flower creations?

Creating Christmas Joy

December 4, 2013 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

DIY_felt_garlandChristmas joy is here! We have been hanging out in front of the fireplace, playing games, and singing songs loud for all to hear. It can be a crazy busy time, but I hope you are able to unplug and enjoy the little things that make this season such a special time.

I want to share this simple Christmas joy garland that I made in a matter of minutes. You too can make this. Follow these simple steps and you will make a stunning decorative banner (and all who see it will ask how you cut such amazing snowflakes out of felt :)).

The first thing I did was cut three triangles out of burlap. I then placed a foam sticker on each burlap triangle and sprayed painted lightly over both of them.

Joy_burlap_bannerOnce the spray paint was dry, I peeled up the foam sticker. The light layer of spray paint had created a stencil for me to see my letters. I carefully painted the letters in red. Note: the spray paint barely changed the color of my burlap. It just got a little lighter.Painting_lettersOnce the letters were dried, I cut two slits at the top of each of my burlap pieces to allow for the string to be strung through. I used red and white cloths line from the Dollar Tree to string my joy banner. I liked the color combination of this option, but any ribbon, string, yarn, or rope would work.

Christmas_garlandThe last step was to string everything alone the clothesline. I bought two packages of red, felt coasters at the Dollar Tree. I opened both packages and simply strung my clothes lines through one of the outer holes of one of the coasters to begin. I strung four coasters, then my letters, and then the remaining four coasters onto the clothesline. I spaced them out evenly and hung it up! My Christmas joy garland was complete!

Felt_coasters

Christmas_joy_garlandThis was such an easy DIY and fun way to add a little Christmas joy to our home. If you like the idea of adding Christmas joy by simple “joy” crafts, you would probably like this one too.

I think the felt coasters used in this post would be cute as a garland all by themselves. There are lots of ways to use this idea. White coasters would look cute as “snow” too.

I hope you are having a great week and finding some peace and ways to imagine in the midst of a season when so much is thrown at you.
