May’s Spoonful Tribe Craft Kits

May 1, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

summer_craft_kitSummer is right around the corner. Can you feel it!? I know I’m aching to take homeschooling off my plate, and sit by the pool. As I tell my first grader, let’s finish strong, I am silently saying it to myself as well.

If you are like me, there are LOTS of things to look forward to this summer. For one, I hope to craft a lot and attack some projects that we have been wanting to do for a while.

I would LOVE to help kick off your summer with something for you.

May TribeToday, we open registration for our May Spoonful Tribe craft kits. These kits will teach you how to make a fun, textured vase and three pin wheels. On top of that, with my Tablespoon and Serving Spoon kit options, I will be sending you a little gift from me. This burlap “oh, happy day” banner is a great little emellishment to hang in your home all summer longer! I hung mine on my mantel.

summer_mantelThe vase and pinwheels can do much more than just hold and decorate flowers. The pinwheels would make great cake toppers and the vase can hold anything you want! I love having paintbrushes in mine.

summer_centerpieceWe are constantly trying to improve and make the Spoonful Tribe the best experience for you possible. We have found that keeping it simple helps. There’s no long term commitment. No hidden costs. Pick the kit you want, we send it to you with all the supplies included. We offer three different variations of this kit, so you can pick the best price point and size that makes sense for you. All the kits include a tutorial video where I personally walk you through how to create each craft.

Felt Flower Tutorial

February 5, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

DIY_felt_fairy_wandsFor the love of felt!

I am all about color. I have found felt and flower projects are a simple way to add that pop of color to an ordinary project or room.

To make this felt flower, I simply cut eight petals out of felt. Each petal was roughly 2.5″ long.

felt flower suppliesI used wool felt balls as the center of my flower and hot glued one petal at a time on to it. After I had one row of petals around my felt ball, I simply hot glued another row behind.

creating_felt_flower

DIY_felt_flowerOnce both layers of petals were glued in place, I turned my flower head over. I used sharp scissors and snipped a slice in the felt ball. I created a little envelope fold by doing this. I placed hot glue and then a dowel rod into the hole. After holding the rod in place for a few minutes to let it set, I let it go and had the base of my flower complete!

After I created a few of these flowers, I decided add one more touch to give it a more finished look. I simply used some chiffon left over from making my chiffon flowers and hot glued a little of it in place and wrapped it all the way down my dowel rod. I used a little more glue to hold it in place at the bottom, and it was done!

Flet_flower_tutorial

Felt_flower_tutorialI think these flowers are so cute by themselves in a vase! As I had them posed in a vase in our dinning room, my daughter came by and wanted to smell them and started waving them around saying she was tinker bell. She is a blast. She gave me the idea that these sweet flowers could be sweet party favors for a fairy birthday party. There are so many possibilities, if we use our imaginations!

If you like this felt flower, I have two other designs you might enjoy! Take a look at this felt flower and my burlap flower design that uses wool felt balls in the center.

felt_flowersFor the next three people that buy one of my Spoonful Tribe Craft Kits, I will place one of these flowers in your box. How would you use your flower? So, hurry, click here and buy your kit right now to ensure you get one of these flowers in your kit!

DIY Felt Flowers

September 29, 2013 By Erica Deuel 4 Comments

DIY_felt_flower_tutorial

There have been cooler temps here. We are wearing jeans and enjoying the new colors on the trees. I love fall. It is my favorite season of all.

Fall always makes me break out my felt crafts. Ever since I was pregnant with Reagan and started making her hair bows, I have loved playing with felt.

I have started creating a little decor for my first SpoonfulLab, and felt flowers are one thing that I have been creating. If you love felt and would like to make some bouquets that wont ever die, follow along with this post to learn how to make one beautiful felt flower.

how_to_make_a_felt_flowerThe first step is to gather some supplies:

    • Felt
    • Hot glue gun with extra glue sticks
    • Scissors
    • Floral Wire and Tape

felt_flower_materialsIn order to make this flower, I cut two different strips of felt to begin. One strip was about 1″ tall and the other was about 2″ tall (the width was the length of the 12″ felt square that I bought).

cutting_felt_flowersThen I just started cutting circles/ovals out of both strips of felt. I just eye balled them. They are all different and not perfect, but since they are all cut from the same strip they were pretty close in size.

cut_felt_circles

cutting_felt_flower_petals

The exact number of circles used per flower is up to you, for how big you want your flower. From my piles, I had enough circles/petals to create several flowers. The flower I’m going to show you, uses 6 small ovals and 9 large ovals.

To start the flower, pick one small petal and hot glue it around your flower stem. Once it is glued fold it like a taco around the stem, and then glue another one across from it. This creates the center of your flower. Be sure to not have the flower stem glued all the way to the top of the petal, as it would then stick out of the flower.

center_of_a_flowerYou then simply start gluing petals on the seems from the previous layer of petals, as shown below. No need to fold these petals, just apply them as ovals with a little glue and a pinch at the base of the petal.

adding_felt_petals

adding_felt_petalKeep building with the same small size petal until you have a size that is pretty uniform in shape that you like. Once the middle is complete, continue this same process with the larger size oval petals. This will create a bigger flower faster.

felt_flowersYou can add as many flower petals as you like. For my flower, I have about three layers of small petals and two layers of larger size petals. Depending on how you may use this flower, the size can range greatly. Once you have the flower the size you like, you are ready to finish off the stem.

Simply add a little glue at the base of your flower and stick the floral tape onto it. Wrap the tape around the flower, adding glue where you need to in order to prevent the tape from slipping down. Continue around the flower’s stem until you are off the felt flower and a little ways down the stem to blend it smoothly. Add a little more glue on the wire and rip the flower tape off and press it into that glue. As always, be careful with your fingers and that hot glue! If you are new to hot glue, you may want to consider wearing work gloves.

felt_flower_stemYour flower is then complete! I am enjoying making these while watching all my favorite shows. I love that fall also brings back the my favorite TV shows!

felt_flower

These little flowers look great by themselves, or in a jar with a whole bunch of them! you can also alter this idea and put the flowers on wreaths or little hair bows. Do you love felt too? It is such a cheap supply to have on hand and an easy way to add color to craft.

I hope you are having a great weekend! Before your week gets busy and gets away from you, registration is open for a SpoonfulLab in Roswell, GA for October 26. We already have a great group of ladies signed up, if you’d like to join us, click on over to my post to get more details and register!

DIY Burlap Flowers

May 27, 2013 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

diy burlap flowers

I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t born with a green thumb. Most flowers and plants probably see me as the Grim Reaper. “No please, anyone but her!!! Don’t let her take me home!” they scream as they see me and my shopping cart approaching. Kids, no problem. Pets, piece of cake. Put a plant or flower in my care and you might as well say your goodbyes.

So if you are anything like me (or you are in the mood for a cute DIY burlap flower craft) then today’s post is just for you! The flower arrangement, you can’t kill! Sound good? Ok, here’s what you need to get started:

Materials

  • Scissors
  • Burlap
  • Dowel Rods
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Wool Felt Balls

cutting burlap pieces

The first step is to cut your burlap petals out. I cut strips about five inches wide. Taking the strips I then cut those every four or five inches so I ended up having a stack of burlap squares. From there I eyeballed cutting flower bases out. They don’t all need to be the same. Just make sure they all have the same amount of petals. I cut mine to have four petals. Once you have cut your burlap petals, you are ready to start piecing everything together to make the flowers.

craft supplies

Take one burlap petal piece and hot glue one of the wool felt balls into the center.

DIY burlap projectNext, put a small drop of hot glue on each petal to attach them to the side of the wool ball (as shown below).

wool felt ball and burlapThen hot glue another petal burlap piece below the first one. Turn it so the petals are rotated in between the petals of the first burlap petal piece.

making a burlap flowerHot glue each petal down, and hold each one for a few seconds to make sure the petal seals and the glue sets. Be careful of the hot glue as it squeezes through the burlap.

hot glueing burlap project

burlap and color

Keep adding layers of petals over and over until your flower is as full as you want it to be.

burlap and color ballOnce your flower is as full as you want it to be, take another petal and cut a slit in the middle of it.

burlap flower petal

Stick one of the dowel rods into the hole, and put a huge glop of hot glue on top of it. Then place your finished burlap flower on top, and hold it down for several seconds.

hot glueing burlap

making burlap flower

burlap flowerThen take a small scrap piece of burlap and hot glue it around the edge of the dowel rod and the flower. This step helps strengthen the attachment of the two as well as make the flower look better.

burlap flower stem

burlap flower stemsYour flower is then done! You can make as many flowers as you want! I love that you can take this idea and make lots of different sizes or use the technique to make more than just bouquets. I think the flowers would look cute to make napkin rings, wreaths, or as an ornament to lots of different baskets or buckets.

cute flowers you can makeI put my flowers in a pretty clay vase on the buffet in my dinning room. If you like these burlap flowers, you might like another burlap flower I created and used on hairbows.

buffet decorSo, what about you!? Do you have a green thumb or like the idea of fake flowers too??
