Spring Mantel Decor with Crafts

February 20, 2019 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Who is ready for winter to be over!?

(All the hands went up and the hearts said yes). Especially the ones in the northern mid-west of the United States. We got more ice and snow last night in Indiana, so it felt like the perfect time to show you what I did at our art studio yesterday.

I set up spring.

It was time to take down the winter-Valentines decor…

I went straight to warm colors, softer textures, and crafty bits for spring. It was inspired by these two baskets I found thrifting last weekend.

I wanted to use the baskets as little shelves to hold a vase of flowers in our new mantel display. Although I had this idea, I knew the vases needed to be light since the baskets are thin.

Since this mantel is at our art studio I constantly am trying to think of how to keep it easy, cheap, creative, crafty, yet not tacky. I want it to inspire others that pretty doesn’t have to be expensive and that you can mix some easy crafty bits into decor to look pretty and feel personal at the same time.

I decided for the light flower vases I would use old soup cans. To soften their metal look and give another texture, I simply wrapped some thick yarn around it a couple of times and knotted it off.

I stuck some fake flowers in the can, and my light vase to go in my basket was complete. I wrapped some wire around my new vase and stuck it through the basket and twisted the wire behind the basket to get my vase to stay in place.

I ended up putting the vases in the middle of the baskets, so the baskets look more like a frame than a shelf. It looked better to scale this way. If I had bigger “vases” I might have kept with the shelf idea. I like this process of creating where an idea might start as one thing, but as you create, you take it somewhere else.

It’s part of the fun of creating. We aren’t tied to our original ideas we see in our brain.

I strung up a clearance banner I found at Target for $0.50, put some Dollar Tree succulents in some wood pots we sell at the studio for people to paint, and hung up two umbrellas (for that spring rain) that I found at Hobby Lobby for $7.00 each and my spring mantel was complete.

Do you ever find one item that inspires a look? I had a bunch of random ideas in my head for this new mantel, but once I found the baskets- it all came together!

Do you remember what last spring’s mantel was with the butterflies!? Take a look here and let me know which one is more YOU!

Happy day friends! Spring will come, but until then we can make the most of each day for the gift that it is!

How to use Felt and Yarn in the Spring

April 1, 2014 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

spring_craftsWhen you think of yarn and felt, do you think of their use more for in the fall and winter?

Although I think they are perfect for the winter months, I would also argue they are great for spring and summer as well. Maybe this makes me a rule breaker. Will you break the rules with me too?

As I was crafting this week, I realized my two new projects both used what most may consider “winter” craft supplies.

If you use some bright, spring and summery colors, I think amazing crafts can use felt and yarn year round. Let me prove my case to you with some pictures.

I took this stick from my backyard and spray-painted it a light pink. I then simply sanded it a little and wrapped some yarn around it to add another punch of color and texture. How cute can this idea be paired with some other spring decor?

DIY_felt_hydrangeaI never get sick of seeing yarn pom poms. There are some awesome tutorials on pinterest, if you have been wanting to make a few. I simply spruced up the bouquet from my winter mantel with a few spring color pom poms.

Handprint Santa

December 19, 2012 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

I love hand print art and capturing the cuteness of my kids’ hands being so little.  You might remember seeing my Thanksgiving turkey or how we stamped ornaments with their hands.  Today, I am showing you our handprint Santa Claus.

In the light of events from last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary, these simple Santa Claus handprints have moved me more than just seeing a cute craft.  I can’t stop looking at these handprints and thinking how blessed I am.  I continue to pray for these families and that this event in our country’s history will mark us and change us past the initial shocks so we are forever changed.

Here is how we made our handprint Santas:

I helped my kids stamp their hands with white paint onto some brown craft paper.  I then let the boys cut out their handprints while I cut all the pieces of the hats and faces.   I then let them assemble their Santa as a puzzle.  I drew Reagan’s Santa’s mouth to show the boys how a mouth looks when it is talking, and they did the same to their Santa’s.

We then glued our Santas to a pretty piece of scrapbook paper and added some merry “Ho, Ho, Ho’s.”  This is a simple and easy craft that has all the kids’ favorites:  Paint, cutting, gluing, and acting out “ho, ho, ho.”

Thank you so much for checking out our handprint Santas!  I hope you are having a good week and not stressing out too much!  I know my to-do list is still a mile long, but I am choosing to sing Joy to the World and not letting the stress carry my emotions and thoughts all day everyday.

How are you doing this Holiday season??

DIY Feather Wreath

November 30, 2012 By Erica Deuel 4 Comments

I am so excited to share today’s Project Spotlight with you!  A few weeks ago, I fell in love with a white feather wreath at Target.  I stood there staring at it, trying to decide if I should buy it.  It cost $19.99, and I decided to pass it by and try to make it myself.

Today I am going to show you the technique I came up with to make this DIY feather wreath, and it only cost about $4.00 to make!  That is less than 1/4 the price at Target, and it really was so easy!

Here is what you will need to buy: one styrofoam wreath and white craft feathers.  I already had my hot glue gun with glue sticks, but if you do not have those items, you will have to buy them as well.  I got my foam wreath (normally $4.47) at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon.  I also got my white craft feathers there, and they were 30% off this week.  So, the normal $1.99 a package of white craft feathers cost me about $1.30 each.  I completely used both packs.

I started by adding a big drop of hot glue to my wreath.

I added a feather and pressed my thumb on the spine of the feather to prevent getting burned.  I just want to briefly say here, I am so sorry for my messed up/old finger nail polish in all these pictures.  How embarrassing. 🙂

I went about five or six feathers across the styrofoam of the wreath.

Those feathers were my first row.  I then started my next row about an inch lower on the styrofoam.  This allowed for lots of overlap but spread the feathers out a little, so I didn’t need as many.

I found that the five or six feathers across allowed for some “wrapping” on the sides of the wreath.  They started to go towards the back but also the back still had a bare streak, so as not to waste feathers that would not be seen.  Play with the amount of feathers you need.  Depending on the size of your ring of styrofoam and feathers you may need more or less.  The important part is to just cover the sides well because you don’t want any styrofoam to be seen at any angle your wreath ends up being displayed and seen.

You then just keep adding rows and rows of feathers doing the same steps until you are about to where you started.

From there you do your best holding/bending the first row of feathers back so you can stick glue in there behind them and glue those final rows.  It was a bit tricky managing it on my own, but it can be done!

After you get those last rows done, you are done!  You have just created a professional looking wreath for less than 1/4 the price!

I love it!!  I think it looks Christmasy yet also wintery.  Even after the rest of your Christmas decorations come down, this pretty wreath could stay up till the spring!

I think these wreaths would make amazing Christmas gifts for friends or family.  I think they would also make fun hostess gifts or a nice wedding/house-warming present.  The ideas are endless, and they are gorgeous and CHEAP!

I stuck my wreath up on my mantle with a little star I found at the Dollar Tree last week.  Today we are getting all of our Christmas decorations down out of the attic and I can’t wait to really deck my halls with this beauty!  I’m sure I will be back to show you my results!

Have you started decorating for Christmas?  Can you see yourself making this wreath?  Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
