Emoji Party Craft

January 23, 2019 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

Emoji kids craftDo you have any emoji fans in your family?

We do. My daughter will often want to use my phone to text extended family and she will type one sentence but then use like 20 emojis. She will giggle as she selects each one. It’s pretty funny.

Today, we have a quick and easy craft for you to pull out for your emoji fan to enjoy! Use it as a party craft, as a life saver for a snowy day, or just for a fun weekend project. It’s low mess and sure to bring smiles!

This is how you do it…

Grab a stack of paper plates, some craft sticks and a stapler to start. The first step is to turn one plate over on top of another and staple around the edges to attach the plates to one another. paper plate craftAfter you have a face form, I used a little hot glue to attach my craft stick inside the plates. There was enough room between the stapled areas to stick a glob of glue on one of the plates, place a craft stick on top, and hold the sides of the plate together until the glue holds and hardens. After you have attached your stick, your emoji is ready to be created. This is where you can use whatever you have on hand! Markers, crayons, colored pencils, and even construction paper would be great tools to use to create your classic emoji face.

We used pastels and leftover party photo booth cut outs (minus their stick) to create our faces. We placed all the tools out on the table and watched to see what inspired our artists and which face they created. These were quickly used as puppets or props as kids talked and acted out little skits with them. It’s a magical moment to watch a creation turn into inspiration for more fun!

What do YOU think!? Will you make some emoji face puppets this week?Emoji kids craftThis is such a simple project that you can personalize however you want! Maybe you want to paint your face-that’s great too!

Maybe you don’t have an emoji fan but you have an LOL Doll fan!? I’m sure you can take the idea of creating a face and turn it into an LOL doll. Maybe you add hair cut outs for your artists to glue on!? There are so many possibilities on how you can take this project and make it yours!

Have fun! If you create some puppets, we would love to see! Tag us on social media with #spoonfulofimagination so we can see your masterpieces!

Kid’s Picture Frame DIY Craft & Party Favor

February 11, 2014 By Erica Deuel 10 Comments

kid_art_party_favorKid parties can be expensive. Can I hear an AMEN!? Yes. I will pretend I heard you relate. I love throwing my kids’ birthday parties, but everything adds up. Plates and paper goods, games, decor, food, and goodie bags all add up quickly.

Something that I have learned is that if you can combine a few things to act as TWO things you can save some money and stress. What I mean by that is why not have the “game” or “activity” also be the party favor? It not only gives you something fun to do, but also something to send home.

Recently I was asked to prep a craft for my son’s homeschool co-op class to do together. I was all too eager and excited. Crafting with kids is a great love of mine. I secretly wish I could still be in elementary school and do all the fun crafts and activities.

I wanted to come up with a craft that was fun, required a minimal mess, and would last longer than a week on the frig. After seeing my talented friends’ photo message board post, I knew I could alter their idea to come up with this fun party craft. Note: If you like this idea, but want an adult version-PLEASE go check out my friends’ post!

The first step was to take a 2″ x 4″ and use my Ryobi Miter saw to cut it into 4″ segments. This created a nice size square base for our photo holders.

Ryobi_Miter_SawI then sand the edges of the wood blocks with my Ryobi Sander to create smooth edges.

Next, I spray painted each block a fun color with Rustoleum spray paint. I picked Valentine’s Day colors since this was for a Valentine’s Day class party, but you could paint any color to coordinate with your party theme.

Rustoleum_spraypaint_projectOnce the blocks were dry, I used super glue to attach the clothespins to the wood blocks. After the clothespins dried and were secure, my prep work was done! I now had the base for a fun, perfect kid’s craft!

Kid_party_craftI simply gathered some pretty scrapbook paper, glitter glue, stickers, and tape and the blocks were ready to be embellished! I love how the kids can cut, use their imaginations, and create something fun and useful with this craft. These little photo holders would be so cute sitting in their bedroom and be something they can be proud of and use all year (not just as holiday decor).

valentines_day_craftI think each picture frame would still turn out so differently, even though the same supplies are being used. You could see each kids’ personality by how they decorate their picture frame. I decorated the front and back of one, to give the class an idea of what you can do.

Valentines_Party_craftThese would be a cute way to display those Valentines they receive at a school party, hold reminders/notes, or a school picture. I’m going to take a class picture of my son’s class and print each child out a copy to use in their picture frame holders.

The best part of this craft!? I had most of the supplies. I picked up a 2″ x 4″ piece of wood for about $4, a package of clothes pins for $1, and a handful of sticker and paper things from the Target Dollar bin and I had a fun craft for 16 kids. That’s awesome!

How do you keep kid party costs down!? I love how when we use our imaginations we can come up with some thrifty ideas! I’d love to hear yours!

Winter ONE-derland

January 10, 2012 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

On Saturday, we had a family birthday dinner for our little girl.  There were aunts, uncles, a cousin, grandmas, grandpas, a great-grandma, and even a great-aunt all here to love on our little girl.  She is so blessed to have such wonderful family live near by!  We did miss some pretty great aunts, uncles, and a cousin!!

Matt and I made our first ever, from scratch lasagna for the occasion.  It was pretty much amazing and now my favorite lasagna of all time!  Too bad it was so much work to create cause it might not be happening again for a while! 🙂

Rea was/is still recovering from RSV so she took a little nap during the party and then crashed before all her guests left.  Poor girl!  She was a blast though!  She started into her cake before we had even finished singing to her!  That’s my girl!

Rea was born during the snow storm last year, so it only seemed fitting to give her dinner a “winter ONE-derland” theme, except it was like 70 degrees here this year! Ha!  Here are some pictures from our evening:

p.s. The last picture is a pretty common theme to all our dinners with family.  At some point, my boys decide to start a wrestling match and its just a matter of who their victims may be!  Soooooo watch out 😉 BOYS!  Gotta love them!
