May’s Spoonful Tribe Craft Kits

May 1, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

summer_craft_kitSummer is right around the corner. Can you feel it!? I know I’m aching to take homeschooling off my plate, and sit by the pool. As I tell my first grader, let’s finish strong, I am silently saying it to myself as well.

If you are like me, there are LOTS of things to look forward to this summer. For one, I hope to craft a lot and attack some projects that we have been wanting to do for a while.

I would LOVE to help kick off your summer with something for you.

May TribeToday, we open registration for our May Spoonful Tribe craft kits. These kits will teach you how to make a fun, textured vase and three pin wheels. On top of that, with my Tablespoon and Serving Spoon kit options, I will be sending you a little gift from me. This burlap “oh, happy day” banner is a great little emellishment to hang in your home all summer longer! I hung mine on my mantel.

summer_mantelThe vase and pinwheels can do much more than just hold and decorate flowers. The pinwheels would make great cake toppers and the vase can hold anything you want! I love having paintbrushes in mine.

summer_centerpieceWe are constantly trying to improve and make the Spoonful Tribe the best experience for you possible. We have found that keeping it simple helps. There’s no long term commitment. No hidden costs. Pick the kit you want, we send it to you with all the supplies included. We offer three different variations of this kit, so you can pick the best price point and size that makes sense for you. All the kits include a tutorial video where I personally walk you through how to create each craft.

Reserve_My_Box_Button

pinwheel_craftDo you just want the supply list and video tutorial links? You can get that with our Teaspoon Craft Kit.

Do you want the supplies and tutorial videos to create the vase and pinwheels? You can get all this with our Tablespoon Craft Kit.

Do you want all the supplies, bonus supplies, tutorial videos, and special gift creation from me!? You can get that with our Serving Spoon Craft Kit.

There are options and we hope to help you create and imagine in an easy, FUN way! You can do these crafts! I love this little growing tribe of crafters. It is so inspiring for me to see how you take the supplies and create your own creation. Seeing your imagination come alive and your creativity in the works inspires me.

Thank you so much for all your support. If you have a friend or a “pin board” that you think would enjoy this craft, it would mean so much if you shared it!

Thank you for being the best readers ever.

DIY Painted Wood Vase {tutorial}

April 16, 2014 By Erica Deuel 3 Comments

DIY painted_spring_vaseThe other night Matt brought home some flowers for me. I love flowers. They are so fun and bring such a fresh pop of color into your home. Well, I went to put my new flowers in a vase and decided I wasn’t happy with my options.

Really, truth be told, I had some wooden dowel rods that I had already envisioned somehow wrapping around a jar. So, these new flowers gave me an excuse, and I got to work. It started off like a mash-up of Lincoln Logs meets a weird game of Jenga. After several attempts, I came up with a design I liked. So I wanted to pass on to you my DIY painted wood vase tutorial.

I started by cutting my dowel rods four inches in length. I had a collection of widths measuring from 3/8″ to 5/8″. I love how the different widths of wood add a variety of depth and breaks it from being in a solid pattern. Note: Before you cut your dowel rods, measure how long they need to be around the width of glass vase you will put in the center. I used a Dollar Tree slender tall vase. If you use a fatter vase/jar your dowel pieces will need to be longer.

Dowel_Rod_craftI then picked out some pretty spring paint colors and painted each side of my dowel rod pieces a different color. This step was a little tedious, but it was mindless and for that I loved it!

painted_dowel_rodsAfter the dowel rods were painted on every side and the ends, it was time to start connecting them together. This step was sort of like a puzzle to stack the pieces in a way where a) there were not two of the same colors on top of each other and b) there were not two of the same size rods on top of each other. I simply used a small dab of hot glue to attach the rods to one another. Note: It was important to place the base shape of my design around my intended vase to make sure I was creating a wide enough center.

making_a_vase

Small_wood_vaseI simply kept adding blocks and glue till my vase was tall and I had used all my dowel rods.

wood_vaseOnce I was done stacking all my dowel rods pieces, I went back and touched up my paint job in various places that were obvious.

spring_craftFinally, I gave my new wood vase a quick spray of Rustoleums Clear Gloss spray, let it dry, and it was done! I put my flowers in water in the glass vase and placed it inside the wood vase. I can’t stop looking at it. I love how it came out.

painted_wood_vase

spring_flower

painted_vaseWe have so many glass or ceramic vases. It is so fun to see a non traditional use for wood and a splash of spring color in my vase as part of the centerpiece.

There are so many possibilities with this idea. I was going to originally do an ombre look, but I couldn’t decide which color I wanted so I scratched that for my vase. I think a really pretty teal/mint ombre version would be gorgeous or just staining the wood pieces would be pretty too!

This idea can also be used for a pencil or paintbrush holder. You don’t have to stick the glass vase inside!

spring_flowersSo, I am a little excited about this creation. What do you think!? Do you need a change for your flowers too??

Thanks so much for stopping by!

DIY Blue Painted Vase

July 27, 2012 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

This week I had a little inspiration for my Friday Project Spotlight item.  I’m sure you have seen these GORGEOUS vases at Anthropologie:

I love them!! A thought that goes through my mind shortly after I figure out I love something (and want it) is “can I make it?”  I always think if I can make it, than it will be cheaper.  In this case, I thought I would give it a try.  My results aren’t anthropology, but I am pleased!!

I first got a clear glass vase at a thrift store for $0.99 and a bottle of paint for $0.68 at Hobby Lobby.

I poured the paint into my vase, and I kept turning the vase to let the paint flow all over and cover the clear glass.

It was kind of hard to get the middle “bump” of the vase covered so I ended up turning the vase over and letting it completely drain out.

There were only a few spots of the vase that weren’t totally blue (including the lip at the top), so I used a paintbrush and touched up those spots with the paint that had drained out.

I thought it looked pretty good here, so I tried it out.

I almost left it alone, but decided I needed to keep going with my task at making a cheaper Anthropologie type vase.  Plus, I had some etched glass markings I needed to cover up.

I sprayed a little glue on my vase and wrapped a piece of lace I had on hand around it.  I did this because I thought my black flower was too much smaller than the Anthropology vases’ flowers.  Plus, I LOVE texture!!  I then hot glued a black flower that I got at Jo Anne’s on it.  It was $1.50 with a %50 percent off coupon!

I really love the finished product, and I am so glad I kept going with this project!  I’m still working on “sealing” the vase so it is water proof.  Right now I have added a gloss varnish protective finish to it.  It is not totally “set”, so I can’t add water and try it yet.  I am hoping it works and the water doesn’t just break down my acrylic paint!  I would love to use the vase with real flowers.  It looks so good with these sunflowers on my end table!

If it doesn’t work I could always do something like this with it.

I am so pleased with my vase and think I got a good enough similarity to the Anthropologie vases.  What do you think!?!

Anthropologie, would you like to buy my design!?!  🙂

Thank you so much for checking in on this week’s Friday Project Spotlight item!

If you all LOVE Anthropologie and would like to win a $25 gift card there, go on over to Gentri Lee’s blog and register to win this giftcard from, Thriftary (one of my favorite blogs!).  There are lots of other goodies there to win too!

I hope you all have a great weekend!!
