Wood Slice Valentine Art

January 31, 2023 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. What a great opportunity to either make a little handmade gift (or purchase a little handmade gift) to show someone you love that you care! In this post, I am going to show you how I made some wood slice valentine art, and you can do the same!

I first started with some wood slices I have been drying out in my garage, since the fall. If you saw my big 4-0 birthday celebration, you know what these slices are from!

I love buying samples of my paint colors before I paint a new wall in our house.

It allows me to test the paint, stare at it in all kinds of lighting, and then I reuse that paint on other projects. I used a dark, charcoal gray to be the base coat for these wood slices.

Once the base gray color was dry, I went back and painted a soft pink heart in the middle of each one.

The wood slices were still a little textured so I had to be careful to get my smooth lines. I used a small brush and some craft acrylic paint.

I Made a Lot of Valentine Art Signs

I was in assembly line mode making signs. The reason I created a lot was so I could list them in my shop. Although the signs are really fun Valentines’ gifts or art, they are also a powerful reminder to leave up year round!

If you have one scrap piece of wood, you could do this craft idea too. You can also purchase wood slices at most craft stores.

Painting the hearts was my favorite step, but waiting for them to dry was my least favorite step. I was so excited to stylize them up and get some product shots.

There are so many fun color options you could do with this same idea and simple steps. I think a neon version would be so fun too!

It doesn’t have to be a big expensive gift to say “i love you”. I recently sent my mom a little gift, but she said what meant the most were the words in her card. Think of how you could pair a simple gift like this with a card. That’s a gift with meaning that is sure to be the highlight of your receiver’s day!

If you want one of my hearts, you can pick it up in the shop today!

If you need some encouragement in your journey today, I am here to say…you have a strong heart.

No matter what we go through, there is always hope, ability for change, and endless possibilities. We just have to keep going. Small steps are still steps and movement forward. This heart is a reminder that the world needs what you got.

**If you need more encouragement, I’d love to invite you into my new course, Create More Connection.

Kid Made Class Valentines

February 12, 2018 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

Kid Made Class ValentinesAre you making Valentines with your kids for a class party this week?

Our kids’ school does their class party on Friday, so maybe you have a few days still to get ready. If you are finding stores picked over or want something kind of handmade, try making these fun paper valentine’s with your kids!

Kid Made Class ValentinesMy daughter is really creative. I gave her some paper, heart stickers, pipe cleaners and a hot glue gun and she ran with the supplies and made these all on her own. I stood back and watched her dream up fun valentines for each of her friends.

Her process was simple. She cut a heart out of fun papers and treated that heart as the body of a fun little valentine character. She’s been using a hot glue gun for years, so I wasn’t worried. You can also do this step for your child if you want to help teach caution with that tool. She hot glued pipe cleaners to be the arms and legs. She also used heart stickers to be the arms. My favorite part is every little character is different. It helped the process of making 23 valentines for her classmates not seem as tedious.

Kid Made Class ValentinesI don’t know about you, but I don’t buy fruit roll-ups a lot. There’s something about that red, waxy substance that just doesn’t seem like food. Now, this was a fun opportunity to buy something my girl views as a “treat” yet it’s not candy. She’s going to be eating a ton of candy at her class party anyway…why not let her have/give something she enjoys as a special treat, but that’s a little bit different for some extra fun!?

Kid Made Class ValentinesI love that she glued her valentines to her fruit roll-ups to look like the guy was holding the fruit roll up or standing on it. Seriously. She is so creative!

Kid Made Class Valentines

Kid Made Class ValentinesShe worked really hard on these little characters and is so excited to give them to her friends this week! If you have some paper on hand, this could be an easy valentine to whip up with your kids this week.Part of the fun of creating with your kids is just the opportunity to sit and talk with one another. Enjoy!

If you have the opportunity to create these, tag me on social media, so I can see! #spoonfulproject

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you have a great week loving your friends and family well!

Easy (non-candy) Kid Valentines

January 27, 2016 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

easy_DIY_kid_valentineAre you still eating Christmas candy around your house?

It’s easy to get sugar overload at the holidays. I happen to love candy, so I gotta be careful or I’ll eat so many sours that my mouth hurts and I get canker sores. Whoa. Not responsible, right?

I am careful with my kids though. My trainer sister helps keep me in check too. When I thought through what kind of Valentines I could make to send my nieces way, I knew they had to be non-candy. Lucky me, they have the crazy crafting gene as well and love all things creative. I thought these little notepads would be a fun option, and maybe they will entertain all the kids for my sis for a little bit.

DIY_valentineYou can really use any kind of little notepad you want. I have a few from Ikea and then others from Walmart. The light colored notepads allowed me to color the kids’ names right on top. The darker pads I used scrap paper and tape to write the kids’ names on.

There are so many options here. You could paint the kids names, use stickers, or even glitter glue.

easy_valentine_tutorial

candy_less_valentinesTo add even a little more fun, you could write a special message on the inside cover of the notepad to that child. I added little Valentine pencils to mine.

non_candy_kid_valentineThis Valentine can be given just like that or add a little bag of candy, flower, or stuffed animal to it. I definitely snacked on candy hearts as I crafted these up.

easy_kid_valentinesDo you know a creative kid that would enjoy his or her own mini journal to doodle in? Try making these Valentines. You really can’t mess them up. Send them in for the class Valentine’s party. I’m sure the teachers and other parents would love a change from candy too.

Valentine’s Day Garland

February 5, 2015 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

valentines_heartThere are so many projects that I have wanted to share, but moving has kicked my butt. So many projects but so little time! Slowly but surely this house is becoming home, and I am excited to start showing you all we have been working on.

I made this little garland at Christmas time, but still love it. It was simple enough, and it is now working for Valentine’s Day, so I thought I would go ahead and show you!

I got a few basic supplies:

  • scrap fabric (I bought a scarf at the Dollar Tree)
  • styrofoam balls
  • string
  • needle
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors

ball_garland_suppliesI started by threading my needle and feeding the styrofoam balls on to the string. I used a couple of difference sizes, and I like the variety that element adds to the finished look.

string_strofoam_balls

string_strofoam_ball_garlandOnce I had a number of styrofoam balls threaded onto my string, I was ready to start hot gluing the fabric on. I cut the fabric into about one inch wide strips and placed a dab of hot glue onto the ball and pressed one end of the fabric into it. I simply then wrapped the ball in the fabric strip, added another dab of glue and placed the opposite end of the fabric strip into it. It was that easy! Two things to keep in mind.

  1. Watch your fingers. You are moving a small object around with hot glue. If you watch your fingers, you really are just wrapping a ball every which way to cover it up. It’s your garland, so the wrap can be as messy or as clean as you want! I liked the more rustic, slightly messy and not perfectly shaped sphere for each of my styrofoam balls.
  2. Don’t use a lot of glue. The stryofoam will melt and the dab of glue can sink through the scrap fabric and look hard and stiff. A small drop of glue will be all that you need.

valentines_garlandIf you keep those two things in mind, then you just keep repeating that step until every ball is completed. I hung this garland up at Christmas with a string of lights. At first we had our stockings tied up on it and then our Christmas cards clipped to it. I wish I could find those pictures, but I think they got deleted while trying to find more space on my phone.

With the red color, this garland still works for Valentines Day. I have it hanging above the day-bed in my studio, but you could add another felt heart or word garland to decorate it even more for a Valentines Day decoration.

heart_garlandI hope you are having a good week! Thank you so much for reading my blog. I am continually thankful for you all to help me have this special outlet in my life.

Find some space to create, inspire, or imagine as an outlet for some YOU time this week.
