DIY Inexpensive Fur Stool

Do you love it? For me, I like having a few pieces. I don’t want to over do it and look like a hunter’s cabin but a few pieces are fun! I love the neutral color with texture paired with something colorful.

The love of that look gave me an idea a little while ago. I have been searching for the perfect, old, small step stool for a while to use on this project. When I found this little one for $3.oo, I knew I was ready to try my idea.

old_stoolThe first thing I did was use some pliers to pull the little staples out that were holding the cushion in place. I was excited to see the foam was in good condition, so I decided to reuse it. I gave it a Lysol scrubbing to make sure it was clean and set it aside.

old_stool_makeoverI then spray painted thin coats till the stool was covered with a pretty dark teal.

Spray_paint_stoolI bought a couple small faux furs in the craft aisle at Hobby Lobby. If you are a regular there like I am, it is down the felt aisle and costs around $2-$3 a piece. I sewed two pieces together to make one larger sheet of fur.

stool_makeoverI laid the foam back on the stool, figured out where I wanted my seem in the fur to be, and started using my staple gun to attach the fur. After getting one side secure, I stretched the fur across the stool, trimmed some of the excess and then started stapling the rest of the fur in place.

stepping_stool_makeoverOnce the fur was complete, the stool did not give me the “fun” look I was hoping for. I decided to use some paint tape to tape off paint lines to add gold paint to the stool’s legs. That was just what it needed.

painted_gold_legsI love how it turned out! It is such a fun eye catcher. The mix of texture and neutrals with a pop of color is exactly what I had in mind.

step_stool_makeoverMy little Reagan has currently claimed this stool and moves it from room to room. Today, it lived in our sun room where we do most of our school during the week.

bohemian_roomIf you’ve looked into fur pieces, you know that they can be pricey. I think this stool cost me about $7, since I already owned several of the supplies. Creating something can be so much cheaper.

Bedroom makeover

Reagan’s Bedroom is one of my favorite makeovers I have ever done. I think because for half of the creating and planning for it, we were not even in our new house yet. I learned a lot about trying to create for a space that you don’t get to walk by and stand in everyday to imagine and “see” your project come to life. I was stretched and now have made something I am proud of as a result.  If it was my choice, we would play in there all day everyday.

Although she may only be two, it is something Reagan is proud of as well. If you were to walk into my house right now, she would ask you to come upstairs and see her room…even if you have already seen it. It makes my heart so happy. Some work might have been required, but what an easy way for me to show love to my daughter by being able to create something she loves.

Since before we moved, I have been showing tutorials and DIY projects that I have been creating to incorporate in her room. I thought it would be helpful to put all those in one place, so there is a little summary of how create this room. Please feel free to bookmark it, pin it, or share it. Take Steps Upward {step stool}

Have you walked by those pretty step stools in home decor stores and started drooling? I have…well almost. It’s been border lined between lusting and spontaneous buying, but the price tags always scares me off. I seriously have seen these small pretty step stools priced at $50. No joke. I just couldn’t pay that for something that I could create something similar too.

So, I took my daughter out on a date one afternoon and we ended up at Michaels and I bought a plain, raw wood stool for about $6.00 (with the use of a coupon from Michaels’ website).

I made this so quick and it captures the look and ability of those more expensive stools. It allows you to take steps upward while looking beautiful sitting there in the corner. Here is how I made it, so you can save some money too.

Materials:

  • wood stool
  • spray paint
  • acrylic paint
  • stencil
  • sponge paint brush
  • clear glossy spray/mod podge

The first step is spray paint the bottom of your stool. You could also use acrylic paint here, but because of all the different angles I decide to just spray it. I thought it would be easier and create less “dripping”.

Next, paint the top of your stool. You can use any color, but something that compliments the color of the legs will help give a punch of “wow” factor to your stool.

You might be able to tell I have used my stencil before. More on that project coming soon. 🙂 Any stencil will do. I liked this one because it was a circle shape and my stool is also a circle. I bought this at Michaels as well. Use your sponge paint brush to lightly dab paint into the slots. Remember you don’t have to use all of the stencil. As you can tell, I am not catching the scalloped edge of my stencil for how I am using it on this project.

It was too boring for me left like that, so I wanted to add another color and used a small stencil that came with my larger one to go around it. I only used one of the flowers and just eye balled where the next one would go until I had filled the outer part of my stool’s top.

little girls painted wood stoolDon’t worry if you go over the stencil and get paint on the original base color. I did too! It is no big deal to go back, after the color has dried, and paint the original color back over it to cover the “oops” up.

painted step stoolI really loved it, but I wanted to look more professional and finished. I sprayed a light coat of a glossy spray on top. Mod podge would work as well. The idea is to give it that finished shine.

Clear glossI love how it came out! My daughter loves to sit on it and draw on her chalkboard wall in her bedroom. What a cheap way to make a fun and functional accent piece. I am all about adding in pops of color!
