Homeright Paintstick Ez-Twist Paint Roller

October 31, 2013 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post on behalf of Homeright, but all opinions are mine.

Matt went out-of-town this week. He had a quick business trip, and I had a chance to get into his office and paint it. We share this office as it houses both of our computers. For two creative people, this office has been really boring. It needed life.

paintstick_ez_twistI got to learn a little about Homeright and their products at Haven this year. I was so excited when they asked if I would want to review one of their paint products. You know since I have moved into this new house, I have been on a mission to add color to all these bare walls. With Matt gone, I jumped at the chance to my pull my Homeright paintstick out and put it to work. Matt might not want to leave town again for a while because he came home to a purple wall 🙂

before and after painted roomI absolutely love the upgrade to our new space. I can’t get over how easy it was. To be completely honest I am not a patient person. I tend to jump into things and figure it out as I go rather than spend the time to research and do it right. I made my self open the instructions of the paintstick though. I knew if I was to give this an accurate review-I had to do it right. The instructions were so easy to follow. The simple picture and one sentence description was perfect. I had my stick ready in seconds.

easy instructionsI laid our a cardboard box and plastic tarp out of habit when I go to paint. I didn’t need either of them. This paint stick takes the paint right out of the can and fills the tube. It prevents so many messes. I had a tray ready, and I didn’t even need it.

Once the paint is in the tube, you simply twist the handle to push it to the roller. I was scared with would it drip. Was it going to give my wall an even coat? The answer is yes!

I pulled our desk out far enough from the wall to tape my paint area off and to cut it in with a brush, but as you can see I couldn’t fully move the desk for total access to the wall. I was so grateful for the long extension paintstick to help me get the job done. Even with the desk in the way and high ceilings, the paintstick enabled me to paint the wall without any ladders.

use_HOMERIGHT_paintstickHomeright’s Paintstick Ez-Twist Paint Roller let me paint an accent wall in my office in record time. It was so fast. It wasn’t till I was finished painting that I realized I hadn’t put my usual paint scrubs on. I didn’t need them!  I am very impressed. To see a really quick time lapse video of how this paintstick roller compares to a regular roller and a paint sprayer-check out the video on this page.

what_should_i_paintMy biggest question now is “what should I paint next!?” Thank you Homeright for the great product! To learn more about Homeright visit them online, twitter, or facebook.

New Seats Available for Saturday’s Spoonful Lab

October 21, 2013 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

I can’t believe this is the week of my first “official” Spoonful Lab in Roswell, GA. I am busily doing last minute prep. What I am thrilled to realize is that I am loving all of it. I have not been stressed, and I can’t wait to craft with some of you soon! Thank you to those that have signed up and taken a chance with me for my lab THIS Saturday. I know for the first event that may feel like a risky thing. I really appreciate you trusting me. I am excited to be me, craft with you, and create a night that you will be able to unwind and have some fun while creating.

After getting everything ready I’ve decided to open up a few more seats. There are four tickets left to be exact. If you live in the Atlanta area I would love to hang with you this coming weekend! Please view my event page for more details.

Last weekend, I got the chance to go back to Athens and craft with my sister, Joni, and her college roommates for their Spoonful Lab. They have been my like my pilot program and the first time was such a blast that we decided to try to make these happen on a more official and regular basis. This past weekend I took my sign supplies and got to teach a few of my painting techniques to the girls.

I love this relaxed atmosphere. We just craft, chat, and snack. It’s a special day trip with my little Reagan as well. She knows its our time to go to college, and she loves it. She puts on a good show by being her cute self, participates a little, eats way too much sugar, and then crashes for a movie every time.

painting_with_friends

craft_snackingIt’s so fun getting to know these sweet girls. They are awesome, and I couldn’t be more thankful my sister has such a great group around her. One thing that I am loving about our time together is learning about each girl. What they like, what creative things appeal to them from colors to clothes. I love watching them brainstorm and seeing the path of discovery as they go from an idea to an actual finished product and helping them get there with something they are proud of.

One thing that was cool this past week was helping some girls spray paint for the first time.

painting_signsI left and they were talking about making signs for Christmas presents, and I have already received pictures of new signs they have constructed. So cool.

Inspiring these girls and helping them see that they can create is such a joy.

hand_painted_signsI love the energy that comes from creating together. It’s so fun and empowering. Grab a friend and come out and join us this Saturday night! Registration will close Thursday night at 11:59pm… don’t miss out!

girls_craft_nightThank you so much for checking in! If you would like, I would love if you helped spread the word about these four remaining seats. Please feel free to post the above picture on your interwebs. Thank you so much!

Hutch Makeover For A Cause (Foster Care Update)

September 24, 2013 By Erica Deuel 19 Comments

hutch_makeover

Have you ever purposefully destroyed something you created?

One of my first babies (and I’m not talking about my live kiddos…but one of my first painted furniture pieces), I just destroyed to makeover. This painted hutch started my love for painting and repurposing furniture. I re-painted it for our foster care bedroom, so it only seems natural to share with you where we are at in our certification process.

Yesterday, we had our LAST home visit. If you have been (or know of anyone who has gone) through this process, you know what a big deal this is to us. It has been such a journey, and we have been on it for almost a year now. God is so good to bring us to where we are today! We are thrilled!

We are so close! Once our paper work is processed, we will be certified foster care parents.

Our foster care bedroom is almost complete. We have painted it, created a wood planked wall, made wall art, and repurposed this hutch for it. We are praying that whomever comes and stays with us, will feel safe and loved while they use this room.

Now, for some more HUTCH details! This is the piece as I painted it about six years ago.

Colorful_hutchI love the use of color and patterns, but my taste has been a little bit more refined in the last few years. Even if I still love both of those concepts, I no longer loved this piece. So, it was time for a hutch makeover, and I sanded it down like crazy. It took a lot of muscles and a week to recover before I wanted to tackle it with the next step.

sanding_a_hutchThis past weekend, I painted the bottom a really pretty black. I decided to leave a little of the former color on top to give it a more rustic/distressed look. I wanted this piece to look weathered and not perfect.

painting_a_hutchAfter the black paint dried, I sanded it a little more. We used a fine grit sandpaper to smooth the top and used a rougher sand paper to sand the sides of my black paint job (to create a more aged look).

fine_grit_sand_paperI then stained the whole piece, wiped it down, and let it dry. Once it was dry, we brought it inside, added some new hardware and screwed the doors back into place. It was complete!

hutch_makeover_elements

I love how it came together! It now looks like a more classic piece that can still hold lots of colorful things on top and be a fun accent piece in the room. It just wont make your eyes go crazy, as if you were looking at a Dr. Suess book. 🙂

I think it’s so funny how our taste can change and refine with time. I guess that is life.

A spoonful of imagination in the midst of it all can help us to never be scared to try something new, because it can always be changed again!

Tips for Creating a Growth Ruler

August 26, 2013 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

DIY_wood_growth_RULER

I have been wanting to create a new growth ruler ever since we moved into this house. Our old growth ruler was on the back of the boys’ bedroom door at our old house. It was hard to leave that door. I contemplated in my mind switching it out and bringing it, but I decided that would be too much work. Before we moved, we took our last measurements, lot of pictures, and wrote down the measurements to transfer to a new growth ruler.

how_tall_are_you

I finally set out to do this project, and of course I thought I could just figure it out. I looked at some pictures of other growth rulers out there. There are so many beautiful ones. They are all over Pinterest, and I should have clicked on at least one of them for the tutorial. Instead, I decided I would just try to figure it out. I did, but it was hard, and I could have saved some serious time and brain cramps. So, I encourage you to read a tutorial! I learned some things the hard way on this project, and I will share them with you. Hopefully, your growth ruler will be easier to create.

DIY_wood_growth_chart

I’m not good at math. At one point I had I four different measuring tools in front of me (ruler, yard stick, tape measure, and a Speed Square), and I was trying to decide which one was best and how to do it.

1. The Speed Square was perfect. It has a little ridge that caught on the edge of my board, so I could make straight and accurate lines.

2. Sharpie is ok to use and stain over it. I was afraid to use a sharpie for fear my stain would smear it, but it worked great and was much easier than trying to paint all those straight lines. All my measurement lines were done in sharpie.

3. I started my ruler at 6″ inches. This meant that when we hung the ruler up on the wall, we needed to make sure it was hanging 6″ off the ground. You could apply the same principle and start your ruler at any height you want.

4. I first did all my markings, and I went back and added my big stenciled numbers.

5. I used a wider board than most. My board is actually 10″ wide. I liked the wider board to allow for bigger numbers and have plenty of room for names and dates.

6. The length of my measurement lines across are 4″ inches, 3″ inches, and 2.5″ inches long. The 4 inch line is for the foot measurement, 3 inch line for the half-foot measurement, and the 2.5 inch line marks all of the other inches.  My foot and half-foot measurements are the width of two sharpie lines.

7. I should have used a pencil to stencil on my numbers. I used a sharpie, and I had to sand my board several times to cover up the poor placement of my number four.

DIY_growth_chart

making_a_growth_chartThe measuring was the hardest part for me. Once I had my numbers in place, I dabbed painted them in to create a more rustic look, after I liked their placement, just like I did on my inspirational pillow. I then stained my whole piece. I think if I had read a tutorial, I wouldn’t have been as stressed trying to figure it out. Lesson learned.

Now that it is done, we are excited to hang it up!

GROWTH_CHARTI hope this post can save you a little stress! If you find a tutorial you think is perfect-let me know! I’ll add it to this post for reference!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Just a reminder my Wake Up & Do Good sign is still available. I am also having an instagram sale tonight at 5:00pm EST, if you are interested in any of my embroidered hoops!
