DIY Sunburst Mirror

I have been in the process of filling up the walls in our new house. I love to create art, but have been trying to stretch myself away from my normals. I don’t want everything on the walls to be pictures of us or inspirational painted signs. I have been trying to take what I learned about staging shelves, and apply that to these walls. I came up with this DIY Sunburst mirror. They are a fun mix of art with texture.

If you remember my DIY Mirrors, I made colorful mirrors for about $3. I still love them, but they were a little small to hang on the wall by themselves. I decided to turn them into these DIY sunburst mirrors. I love the contrast between the color and rustic nature of the sticks. You wont believe how I made these! It all started with a plate.

I took one of our plastic plates that the kids eat most of their meals on and I spray-painted it a grayish color. I wanted the background to be a more natural color that would blend in better with the sticks. Once the plate was dry, I hot glued one of my DIY Mirrors to the center.

sticksI simply put a small dab of hot glue onto the plate’s edge and stuck a stick on top. I think the only special trick to this mirror is making sure you layer the sticks on top of each other to fill in the cracks. My goal was to create a pretty solid sunburst look to cover up the plate and make a more textured look. I glued new sticks on top of other sticks to cover up cracks of open space.

stick_sunburst_mirrorI just kept gluing around the plate until it was covered up and I was back to where I started. I loved how it came out, so I made two more!

I didn’t have to buy any new supplies to turn the DIY Mirrors into the DIY Sunburst Mirrors. Don’t you love when you have everything to make a project? I’m trying to get more thrifty with my supply expenses. This was fun to see we didn’t need anything. I just might have to clean dishes more since we are now three lunch plates shorter now :).

I probably should have first drilled a hole in the back of the plate to create a way to hang this up on the wall. I didn’t think of it then. So, I simply hot glued some string in a loop on the back. Once the glue was dried, I covered it up with even more hot glue. I then used a super glue above where the string went into the hot glue for extra reinforcement. It worked!

sun_burst_mirrorsMy foyer is coming together! I love the way these mirrors look with our bench and welcome area. I have a few more ideas, but it is encouraging to see this new house start to feel like us. It’s been four months since we moved. I never would have thought we would still be setting up house. Can we say I was naive and an inexperienced mover!?

foyerIf you like colorful foyers like me, then you must check out my friend Kelly’s. She is in the process of transforming her more serious foyer into a colorful space. I may want to steal her new Turkish Kilim rug. You wont believe it. Check it out here!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend!

DIY Mirror

DIY Small Mirror

I don’t know about you but I treat my house like a canvas. The pictures and creations of our family fill our home. I love it that way. Unfortunately when selling a house you have to stage it in a way that people can envision their home and not mine. The whole process has lead to a lot of amazing clean up, de-cluttering, and even new creations along the way. Many of you gave me awesome feedback and suggestions on twitter and facebook.  Thank you for teaching me how to decorate shelves that look more aesthetic and pleasing to the eye. I’ve learned a lot.  I have a whole post coming to share what I have learned, but today I want to show a quick DIY mirror I came up with to use as a staging item on my shelves.

These simple little mirrors were so cheap and easy to make.  I think they make a great item to display that adds a pop of color, yet they are not a picture, candle, or book.

To make your own mirrors here are a few supplies you will need:

  • Wood circles (I got mine for $1.99 each at Michaels)
  • Mirrors (I got mine for $1.00 each at the Dollar Tree)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Super glue
  • Spray gloss finish

supplies to make a mirror

The first step is to pick out the color you want your mirror(s) and paint it a solid color.  I wanted my three mirrors to kind of coordinate, so I decided to try something new.  After I let that first coat of paint dry, I switched up my three paint colors and painted over the dried paint with one of the other three colors.

I literally poured paint onto my wood circle and painted it a solid color in a different color.  Try to do a nice thick, even coat.  I then used some sandpaper to lightly sand the edges, sides, and top of my wood circles so the first paint color would show through.  I love how this step created a worn, artsy, colorful look.  Be careful to not sand to hard or much or you will completely wear off that first layer of paint and go straight down to the wood.

Once the wood circles are sanded, it is time to make them look a little more finished and professional.  I used Rust-oleums clear gloss to spray a nice even coat of finish over my wood circles.  Once you have done this step, let the circles completely dry.

After the shine finish has dried, use a little super glue to stick onto the back of the mirror to place it in the center of your wood circles.  After the glue has dried, your mirror(s) is done!

I love the simple pop of color these mirrors add to my shelves.  They were such a quick and easy project to do.  I kind of want to make a dozen more, but I am refraining.  Since I already had a couple of the supplies, each mirror cost me about $3.00!  What a great deal for a fun piece to have in my house.

I am really into circles right now which might be one reason why I love these mirrors so much.  I’m currently STILL working on my circle rug.  It hasn’t gotten much attention lately, but I plant to work on it more this weekend.  Do you have a project lined up for the weekend?  I would love to hear about it!

An AMAZING gift!

May 29, 2012 By Erica Deuel 4 Comments

I showed you all what I MADE for my mom and mother-in-law for Mother’s Day, but I have not shown you what my AMAZING husband made me.  Brace yourself for this amazing-ness. 🙂

I saw a pin of a large mirror in a gorgeous wood frame on Pinterst forever ago, and I fell in love with it.  Since we have been married, we have just had a big plain mirror leaning up against my dresser in our room.  It was definitely NOT baby proof, but since is  was the only body length mirror we had, we just kind have dealt with it. At times I have had to steer all my kids away from it as they were banging on it, with fear that it could have fallen on them.  During these seasons of our lives, my bedroom door has remained closed all day…everyday.

Here are pictures of baby CALEB playing with our mirror…

For Mother’s Day, I asked Matt if he would make me some version of the pin I had seen.  He FAR out did himself!!  I not only got a safe mirror…it is stunning and oh so beautiful.  The best part would have to be my husband’s heart behind it.

He wanted to make it perfect for me, and he did.  There were many a steps, where I was ready for him to cut corners.  For instance, when the mirror didn’t fit into the frame (one of the two was slightly warped or something from being a perfect rectangle), I was ready for him to just glue another piece of wood behind the mirror.  I thought it could just sit on top.  He wanted it to rest inside the frame, so he hand carved and chipped at the trim until the mirror fell into place.  LOVE.

He designed it.  He bought supplies.  He measured and constructed it. He went back and bought more supplies.  He painted it.  He sanded it.  He stained it.  He chizzeled it.  He touched up painted it.  He touched up stained it.  He waxed finished it.

I am one blessed girl!  Thank you boo for this amazing gift, but more importantly…thank you for the gift of YOU!

He would say it’s not perfect, but to me…it couldn’t be any more perfect!  I am in love with it and my husband!
