30 Days of Imagination

October 7, 2022 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Happy Friday Friends!!

Whew, how was this week for you!?

Next month, I turn a big milestone. Do you know anyone else born in 1982? It’s a big year for us. As I have been on this journey to reconnect to my natural wiring, saying goodbye to false expectations, and welcoming in new habits of health, play, rest, and LIFE, I found myself processing this birthday more than the usual ones.

We all go through seasons of life where it might be more a time of hustle verse a time of slowing down and reflection. What really stands out is that we all can use a reset from time to time in the midst of those seasons. In my reset season, I sometimes still just need an extra little nudge. Hello to being human. I’m thankful for the friends that get me out on a walk and remind me of the things I ultimately am working towards.

Let’s Do a 30 Day Imagination Journey Together!

Do you need a little nudge as well? Let’s journey together. Today, I am beginning a 30 day imagination challenge, and I would love to invite you to join me. I’ve made the calendar. You can take each exercise as elaborate or simple as you want. Get your copy and share this link with a friend as well who can use this fun.

Imagining the possibilities is a form of the creative process.

Imagining is a skill you learn and practice. Show up every day with me for the next month to practice skills, stay inspired, and allow the interesting, rewarding possibilities to emerge. Being young at heart is just a lifestyle. We got this.

Let’s view it as an opportunity to realign with who we are, what we want, and what we’re doing about it. Think about it. Could you use something like this!? GAME ON! This will go until November 5 (the eve of my 40th birthday). I cant wait to see and be inspired by how you take each little prompt! I’ll be sharing my journey daily on social media.

Please tag us on Instagram and use the hashtag #spoonfulofimagination30days if you do as well, so we can journey together!

P.S. We started easy today with listening to some classical music. I haven’t done that in a long, long time but have been wanting too as my friend, Jonna, does when she works! It was so much fun! You can see more of my exercise in this YouTube clip.

Collaborative Scrap Wood Project

September 4, 2019 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

How often do you feel tired in a project or group?

Without even trying, we all get tired or settled in routines and find a comfortable role in a group setting. We often need something to booster us out and awaken us to the creative ideas and excitement around us once again.

I have found that small, hands on, creative warm ups can do just that. A creative prompt can be just what is needed to switch the brain from autopilot and release the ability to play. As John Cleese says, “the most creative people have this childlike facility to play.”

Here’s a quick activity where you can encourage play before your next team meeting or group setting. While it is a pretty non-intimidating activity, it also reinforces we all have a different perspective-and that is what makes a beautiful, well-balanced team!

The first step is to glue a bottle cap to another solid surface. We used scrap wood, but you could use paper, cardboard, or a number of other surfaces.

Next, we asked our group to see what that circle could be. I didn’t want to give too many examples, because I really wanted to get their perspective on how they saw that circle. My example was to use the bottle cap as an “o” in the word “pop”.

It was so fun to encourage the artists to just start drawing. This wood slice creation did not have to live in their homes as long as they do. We used paint markers, but you could use pens, sharpies, crayola markers or a number of other writing utensils as well!

Every artist saw something different in that bottle cap. Even those that saw it as an “o” as well, saw it in a different word. Those that saw it as part of a flower, saw a different type or color of flower.

We all have different experiences and outlooks on the world. This quick little activity demonstrated that belief. We then attached all the individual projects together on one big piece of wood. I love how it shows us all coming together to make something beautiful. The collaborative piece can then hang somewhere for everyone to see and be reminded that we have something to offer as individuals that is vital to the bigger picture.

If you want to see this idea in a video form, please check out our video on our YouTube channel, Spoonful of imagination.

Give this project a try and let us know how it goes! Share on social media with #spoonfulofimagination.

Eddy’s Postcard Series: Please, never grow up Snow White

August 1, 2015 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

If you are just joining this series for the first time, you can read the heart about it here.

There are moments that happen through the day that are just normal. They are my everyday.

For example, it is not unusual for my little girl to be dressed up as a princess and either be wrestling with her brothers or crafting at the same time. Although this is a normal moment, it’s one that I never want to forget.

Someday I will look back at these sweet moments in time and smile through teary eyes at how special, precious, and quick they were. So, I stop cleaning up dinner dishes to just watch her and capture this picture.

2-August 1, 2015

2-August 1 2015 backThis sweet babe of mine is my baby girl. Three weeks ago her world was rocked as we welcomed another little boy into our lives for a season.

He is our first foster placement since moving to Indiana. I look at my sweet girl and realize she is no longer the baby in the house. She is no longer the only four-year old in the house. My heart hurts a little bit for how I have changed up her world, but then I have to believe I am showing her a much bigger world. Telling her to love others is much different than the power of showing her.

We are navigating to find a new normal around here, and I could not be prouder for how my kids are loving this sweet new one in our home.  As my schedule has changed, and I don’t have as much time to do other things besides kids, I am reminded of how I can still be creative in other ways from crafts. Finding special moments with just one on one interaction with my kids is one way I am having to be creative.

It’s funny how when we are searching and looking…we can find them and Jesus has been so good to grant them to me daily. Watching Snow White craft away a coloring picture to cut out, glue to cardboard, and use as a toy was just one moment in the last week that I never want to forget.

to infinity and beyond!

September 21, 2012 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

This week I was asked to make a superhero cape for a friend.  I said “yes!” and thought it would be a good Friday Project Spotlight item.

I love superhero capes and all the imagination and dreaming that they encourage!  As I watch my boys in their capes run and climb trees, I see this phrase in their eyes…

“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, I know I can achieve it.”~Jesse Jackson

I love what a simple cape can encourage and build into the young ones that are our future.  They are a reminder to me.  Let them be little, and let them dream.

My cute model was not feeling his “fierceness” during our photo shoot.  I asked for an awesome superhero face and I got this…

I’m not sure if he was blowing out candles or holding his breath :).  I love this boy!

Thank you so much for looking at my Friday Project Spotlight item!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

If you would like to learn more about how I can create a cape for you through my little business, Dancing Zebras, you can click on the button below to be taken to my store!
