The Perfect Collaborative Art Party Game

December 16, 2022 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Do you have an artist who loves to create with friends! It’s my bet that he/she would LOVE this collaborative art party game!

Over the years our art studio was in business, we hosted hundreds of birthday parties. We found that even after the individual projects were done- the artists would want to keep creating. We always had a coloring station, magnets and play-dough available, but we quickly became known for this fun art game that we held at the end of each of our parties.

We would play an art version of i-spy

Have you ever sat in a restaurant or a doctor’s office and needed a way to entertain kids, while they are waiting? I-spy is a classic game and one you have probably turned to in a moment like that.

Kids get into it and have fun-without even realizing you may just be making the most of some idle time. It’s fun. It forms a connection and you learn a lot about how your child thinks, what he/she notices, and enjoy each other’s company in the process.

We would create a recycled art collage to use for our art version of i-spy. If you want to learn more about how we created this collage, you can view the 5 Reasons Why Creating With Trash Matters post or this quick video lesson from Erica.

How to play i-spy as an art game

I always demonstrated a couple of rounds of leading/playing i-spy first. The idea is you call out things you spy, and they can only be on the i-spy board. The importance is to have a creative collage that is full of different items to make a well rounded, entertaining game. A few idea categories to think through and call out as you play…

  • shapes
  • colors
  • item’s uses
  • item’s location
  • funniest

After I did a few rounds, I would let any artists who wanted to think of one to call it out. If everyone was excited to call an “i-spy” item out, we would just take turns going around the table with everyone getting a chance.

We would play this for as long as kids were really interested. Want to see this game in action? I convinced two of my kids to play with me in this video, so we could demonstrate it to you! They are getting a little old for it, but once they were playing, they still had fun!

Paint that i-spy board

When the fun in the i-spy game is winding down, you can breath new life into the game by allowing the artists to paint the board together! We always just gave out the leftover paint from individual projects and each child a brush. We tried to encourage that teamwork happens in art too. They could each start by painting what stood out to them.

It was so fun to watch the artists paint such unusual items. They’d paint in the items, on the items, around the items and get to see how the paint moves, absorbs, and takes to each item.

We use tempera paint, just in case paint gets on clothes, as hands start reaching. I promise you will know the moment the game is ready to end. You simply say, “on the count of 3, it is time to end and then brushes need to be placed down. 1-2-3 brushes down!” and then it’s time to wash hands. Your artists run off laughing and talking about the fun they just had.

It’s not everyday that artists get to paint a bottle cap, straw or broken shell. Let alone do it with friends after talking, studying and playing i-spy with those items. This i-spy game really is the perfect collaborative art party game. From creating the i-spy board to playing with it and then painting it, you breath a lot of extra life, engineering and fun into those recycled materials.

Sometimes the birthday child would want to take his/her collage home and sometimes we would share the picture and kindly toss the piece.

Isn’t that the beautiful thing about the process being the focus of creating and playing in the arts? If the focus is to have fun, play, and learn as you go then there is no pressure to save the final product. It can just be tossed!

I hope this game inspires you to play a creative art game at your next party or artist has a slumber party. If you need a little extra encouragement, check out this 5 minute video demonstrating a game in action. Let me know, if you try this fun!

Up Your Snack Time

March 30, 2015 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

If you have boys, you probably have some battles in your house. They may be battles of the wills, skills, or even battle’s of sheer strength. Those later battles are the ones that are hardest for me. But boys will be boys, and it’s good for them to have some rough and tumble time – and when it ends with no tears, bruises, or broken furniture, even better!

We try to instill the phrase “use your muscles for good” around here. My boys are growing up knowing they use their muscles to protect. Skylanders_game_boardI love the moment though where I can head off the tears and need for super glue and convince them to “battle” with their minds thinking creatively through a strategic game.

We were all excited when they learned of Skylanders. We are new fans and my boys love the battles. I was excited when I heard that General Mills and Skylanders have teamed up to offer an exclusive Skystones game free with our favorite boxes of cereal. Hidden inside specially marked Big G cereals, fans will find Skystones cards playable on the game board found on the back of the cereal box. This is a battle my boys can participate in!

We love cereal and eat it for snacks as much as enjoying it for breakfast. There is usually a moment every school day where we need a little break and time to refuel before getting back to our book work. Cereal is one of my go to grab items. They will often eat it as I read to them, but when this game came I was excited for them to play! The Skystones game fosters family fun and fuels development through imaginative and cognitive play. My boys were still practicing critical thinking and processing order of steps all while playing. They loved it and didn’t know our school break was still a learning process!

Skylanders_game

fun_snackThe game is simple. Each player gets a set of cards (characters) and takes turns placing one at a time on the board. Each card has certain strengths and by how you place the card on the board determines if your character is stronger than the one you are battling. If you win the battle (you know by little arrows on the cards), you get to flip your opponents card over and that character has joined your team! The player with the most cards on the board once it is full, wins!

Skylanders_cereal_game

Skylanders_cereal_toyThe instructions were so quick to read and grasp. My boys are 6 and 8 and after two rounds of assisting, they were off and playing all by themselves. It looked so fun though, I joined in for a few rounds. No joke, my kids have played lots since and even started battling their dad.

As a kid, I remember the great joy in cereal box toys. They usually were lost or claimed by a sibling pretty quick. I love how this Skystones game is something everyone can enjoy. We will be saving it to play, long after the cereal is gone.

general_mills_cerealHow fun that it comes with cereal!? Participating Big G brands include Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios, Reese’s Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Lucky Charms, Trix and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. A snack and a game…perfect kid activity all in one!

Woodland Fairy Birthday Party

October 20, 2013 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

fairy_party

I am amazed at how many extremely talented people I have in my life. From family to friends (new and old) there is so much creativity around me. I am continually inspired and challenged by those creative juices of so many I love.

I shared with you the other day about how one of our best friends is making films in LA. Today, I want to share with you a birthday party that one of my friends threw her little girl, Zoë.

Rebecca is oh so talented. She is a professional photographer and is so sweet to let me share her gorgeous work with you here. She took these pictures and created this picture perfect party. She has skills!

One thing that I adore about Rebecca is the heart behind the parties she throws for her kids.  Every detail and gorgeous bit of her parties comes from the heart to honor, celebrate, and love her child.

As a homeschool mom of three, pastor’s wife, daughter, friend, and all the other hats Rebecca wears, I love that it is such a priority for her to make her children know they are so loved.

From start to finish her kids help her pick the theme, find inspiration on Pinterest, and create the finished product.

How cute are those “fairy jewels” (pictured above) they created!? She and her girls created them by coloring the inside of an acorn cap with a marker and filling it with school glue. How simple is that!? They are gorgeous.

I have wanted to throw one of my kids an art party for years. The boys have not gone for it yet, but maybe with Reagan I will get this dream. Rebecca came up with some amazing crafts for her party theme. Her daughter, Zoë, was turning five and loves art, so it was a perfect fit.

One of the first activities at Zoë’s party was to paint a fairy house. Rebecca got some $1 bird houses at Michaels, cut the perch off, and had acrylic paint and paint shirt cover ups for the guests. They did this activity first, so the houses would dry by the time the party was over. What a creative idea! A birdhouse is the perfect size house for a fairy. Genius!

Another craft the girls created was a fairy friend! She had all the supplies (popsicle sticks, tulle, yarn, felt, small artificial flowers, sharpie, hot glue gun, and a stick) ready, so the girls could just piece together what they wanted to dress their fairy. While the girls played a game, Rebecca hot glued all the elements together to make a fun puppet.

Reagan would love this! She is so into Tinkerbell (as you might see after Halloween), and she would love to have a little Tink to fly around. I have to remember this craft!

On top of the fun crafts, the girls got to run and be ferries together. Rebecca had a pair of wings for each girl. The wings were decor and doubled as a party favor. They also wore them for a creative version of “duck, duck, goose”.

fairy_party_gameThe girls look like they had the best time. There was so much creative energy and time spent to make such a special day.

The names of the food are perfection!

What an incredible party! I’m currently thinking through my J’s fifth birthday that is coming up. I know he doesn’t want a fairy party, but Rebecca has inspired me to think through what HE would like and not what I want him to like. It is all about celebrating him and the interests and gifts that he possesses.

At the end of the day, if he feels loved and celebrated like this picture of Zoë portrays of her feelings, I will be happy.
fairy_birthday_partyIsn’t she stunning!? I was blessed to hang with this sweet family last week. Can’t wait to do so again soon! Thank you so much Rebecca for letting me share your party with the world!
