DIY Floral Wallpaper

April 22, 2016 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

homemade_floral_wallpaperHave you shopped for wallpaper recently?

I have, and it can be expensive! I shopped a variety of stores and even looked into the removable wallpaper, and I just couldn’t stomach the price.

We have this room that has acted as our foster bedroom and guest room. It’s kind of an awkward sized room. Based on the door’s entrance, closet, and one small window the bed has had to be against this wall to allow for the most free floor space as possible.

bare_wall_beforeThe small window does not let in a lot of natural light, so I painted this room a very, very faint blue to try and brighten up the space as much as possible. You can see the before wall color and other half of the room here.

I have loved the wall color, but there is a lot of it. I’m also realizing not one room in my house has all four walls the same. Accent walls are currently my jam. Off and on I have thought of wall papering that back wall to break up some of the blue. After researching a few papers, I realized the ones I loved would cost me around $300. With a list of other projects I want to do in the house, I couldn’t justify spending that amount on a room that is pretty finished compared to other spaces that need more TLC.

After ruling out wallpaper, I considered stenciling the wall since I did my daughter’s and boys’ bedrooms and love them. There was a part of me that wanted something different from a stencil though.

About five years ago, I painted a floral wall for my daughter’s nursery. I loved it, but it took forever. I was hesitant to do that again, but then I realized its been awhile. I have learned a few things, and why not try it again. It’s just paint! If I didn’t like it, I could always sand and paint over it. I went for it.

paintThe first step was to pick out my colors. One reason I think my first floral wall took so long was I used cheap paint. I decided I needed to use nicer than the the least expensive acrylic paint bottles at the craft store. I ended up opting for paint samples mostly of the HGTV paint line at Lowes, and they were perfect.

I used the same wrapping paper as my inspiration that I used on my last sign. Simple, sweet flower shapes would be my base and I would embellish them a little more towards the end of the project.

My second step was to figure out placement of color and different shapes. I picked two flowers to start with placement/color and grew one new color and flower/leaf at a time. Whenever I did that new flower, I tried to do a few of them at the same time…just spread out across the wall.

painted_flowerspainted_flowers1painted_flowers2painted_flowers3painted_flowers4painted_flowers5painted_flowers6Each flower needed two coats. The only one that needed more was my fushia flower. The color has some red in it…which is always a hard color to paint. Red will always needs lots of coats. After each flower was covered in coats, I started adding more detailed layers to the flowers. I ended up leaving the limey green leaves in one coat. I liked the painted look it created.painted_flowers7These pictures aren’t the best but are what I sent to my sisters and a few friends as I painted. I was obsessed and excited as the floral wall took shape. It was addicting and really only took a few days working off and on! I made a decision to enjoy it and not let it stress me out. I painted each flower like I would on a sign. I didn’t worry about the edges being “perfect”, but left them to have a slight brushed look. The simple imperfection and not correctly centered flower centers make all the little artsy elements come together to create a really fun/funky yet pretty look that I love. painted_flowers8

painted_floral_wallI really love how it came out! The flowers are simple yet beauitful. The pops of colors play together well and create a really warm, fun feel. That light blue wall was the perfect base to embellish on.

homemade_flower_wallpaperThis floral wall allowed that room to be a little more fun, yet it didn’t add a huge amount of color that would make a small, poorly lit room feel even smaller or dark. DIY_flower_wallpaperWhat do you think? Would you try to paint your own “wallpaper”? The thing with this design is I can just paint over it when we tire of it. For now, we love hanging out in this room.

I also can’t stop painting these flowers. I made another sign that includes the flowers and I just love it!

It is well with my soul wood sign3What do you think? Does this simple design yet pop of color pull at your eyes and heart too? This hymn just adds a sweet touch for a powerful reminder to hang in your home. If you are interest in this sign, you can see it in my shop!

How to Tear Apart a Pallet

November 1, 2015 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

Disclosure: I received the saw for free to review, but all opinions and words are my own! I really do love this Ryobi Cordless Circular Saw!

stacked_pallet_woodDo you have those moments where you realize how pathetically weak you are? Maybe you encourage your kids to eat their chicken and finish their carrots, so they can be strong. You might hope those words are true for you too and you consider yourself relatively in shape. Then something happens (like a slap in the face) showing you how totally not strong you actually are?

That moment happened the one time I tried to pull apart a pallet. I had my hammer and a crowbar and was attacking and using my whole body’s weight to try to pry those boards apart. It was horrible.

I ended up getting a few pieces of wood that I was able to use for this poster size frame, but the experience left me never wanting to try that again…and nursing blisters.

I learned the hard way that pallet wood is some of the strongest wood. Although I never ever wanted to use a hammer and crowbar on a pallet again, I did want that beautiful, weathered, free wood.

Since we have moved into our new home (almost a year ago now!), I have dreamed of having a pallet wall around the fireplace. I put some thought into how there must be a simpler way to get this wood.

Ryobi_circular_sawWith the help from my friends at Ryobi, I found the simplest way to get this wood! Don’t mess with the nails. Use the ONE+ 18-Volt 6 1/2 inch Cordless Circular Saw and literally cut the boards off the posts.

how_to_take_a_pallet_apart

DIY_pallet_breakingWe sliced the wood right off the crossbar posts with our saw. We lost some wood by this technique, but we saved so much time and energy. We’d run the saw up one side and then down the other to free the pallet boards from the side posts. Then we’d go back and make cuts on each side of the center crossbar.

how_to_make_a_pallet_wallWe ended up with a huge stack of pallet wood that was about half the size in length as a normal pallet. It was so quick. Since we were cutting boards so fast, they didn’t have the straightest ends. We used our Ryobi Miter Saw to cut the ends even and straight.

ryobi_miter_saw

wood_shavingsOnce we had a bunch of wood with straight ends we were ready to get creating. What was at one time the worst job on earth became such a breeze and FUN.

pallet_woodWe did our wall from start to finish all in one Saturday with breaks, meals, and caring for four kids. If you have a pallet wood project you want to conquer, use this saw. You wont be sorry.

I had never used a circular saw before. Now that I have used this cordless Ryobi one, I can’t imagine another. It was amazing. Here are a few facts:

  • 40% more powerful motor provides corded performance with cordless convenience compared to previous model P506
  • 24-tooth ultra-thin kerf carbide-tipped blade for fast, clean cuts
  • 0-56° bevel cut capacity allows user the ability to cut the most common angles
  • Front pommel handle with overmold for 2-handed operation
  • Left side blade for better cut line visibility

I can’t wait to show you how we put our wall together. I will post more soon. For now, here is a sneak peek!

pallet_wallThis wall is in what we call our snow room. It’s the best room in the house to watch the snow fall. Now that temps are lowering, leaves are falling, and jackets are needed, snow will not be that far off. I can’t wait to sit in this room and watch the fluffy white stuff come down. This pallet wall makes the room feel so warm and welcoming!

Have you ever tried pulling a pallet apart? Did it make you want to pull your hair out too?

When you open our front door this is directly to the right and your eyes can’t help but be drawn to it. The huge bay window brings in incredible light and the gorgeous rug just draws me in. I have already dragged my sewing machine down from upstairs to be able to sew in this room, but I am not the only one enjoying this room as you can see.

The Rug That Captured My heart

April 7, 2013 By Erica Deuel 11 Comments

When I married Matt, I knew I married up. Many of you know our story and that I had a childhood crush on him as a little 6th grade girl at summer camp. Fast forward about nine years, and I was old enough that our five-year age gap didn’t seem like a big deal. We re-met, fell in love, and got married all in about eight months. It was the best decision I have ever made.

When we got married, I moved in to his house. I went from living in a dorm room to owning a house in a matter of months.  It was surreal. We worked through “redecorating” and making this “bachelor pad” our home.

I say all that to say, I have never bought a house or had to move to this level. It is all so new and exciting to me.  I feel like everyday I wake up dreaming and my mind is racing with ideas, excitement, and gratefulness.

I am so excited about going into a “blank slate” and decorating. I am excited to be able to have conversations we have never had before.  For example, where should the couch go? And which wall should this sign hang on?  All this will be new and I am looking forward to it.  It is less than a month away!

I told you I am really excited about decorating Reagan’s room.  Another room that I am giddy about is our dinning room.  It is the first room you see when you walk into the house.

IMG_6792As my sister has said, it is a bit “fancier” than my taste.  I plan to make it our own though!  I love the big bay window that looks out on our street.  I want to create a feel that is warm and inviting, so you know I will be adding lots of color :).

The inspiration behind this room is my gorgeous new rug!

Thank you to Mohawk Flooring for providing this rug for our new dinning room. It is the 8′ x 10′ Mohawk Home Charm Nylon Rug, Multi Colored, and it is even more beautiful in person. I am so giddy about it! As soon as it came, I rolled it out and couldn’t believe it is even more beautiful in person!  I am not the only one that fell in love with it.  My little girl, started dancing and giggling like crazy on it!

Loving our new rug

Isn’t she a sweet model? I think the beautiful colors and flowers are so fun, and they definitely captured our attention!  I can’t wait to put this rug in our dinning room and have it be the accent and palate of colors as our design inspiration.  I love how there are lots of colors we can go off of, yet the bordering and background gray keep it from being too over powering. It is a bold piece, yet it is warm and inviting.  It is perfect! If you are wanting a fun statement rug that will help define a room, I think this is the perfect rug!

Matt is going to make us a big wood table to go in this room as well. I am also trying to find old wood chairs to paint and stain to go with it. I cant wait to figure out some window treatments and art/decor for the walls. I might even move our kids’ art wall into this room.

Our new rug has definitely inspired me and has my mind reeling with ideas!  I will keep sharing our progress as we make over this empty room into a place that we love and use daily!

In the mean time check out Mohawk Flooring. They have a huge selection of beautiful area rugs at reasonable prices, and they can be found in so many stores!   You can also connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and Pinterest.
