DIY Little Tote Bag

December 20, 2013 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

DIY_little_girl_bagOne thing that I don’t think is really communicated to a first time mom is the bag you will need AFTER the diaper bag.

The diaper bag fits a great season where you have lots of diapers, wipes, bibs, bottles, baby food, and rattles that need to be carted around. It is crucial to a mom’s ability to leave the house. There is a phase afterwards where you don’t need to carry as much, but you certainly don’t want your purse to weigh a 100 pounds either. I think of this phase as the little tote bag stage. Reagan is currently there, and I made her a few for Christmas. In this bag I can throw her favorite little toys that she wants to carry at all times, her favorite blankie for long errand times in the van, and even an extra set of underwear and leggings…just in case she has a potty training accident.

The bag is cute. It is almost like a purse to her, but it is multi functional for me too. I think this bag is an essential. I made Reagan a few by embellishing an existing canvas bag. You can do the same to personalize yours in a way to customize it for your child.

Start with getting a canvas bag that you like the size and shape. I found mine at Hobby Lobby, but I think this bag
is pretty cute too with the closure feature.

I found a bunch of scrap fabric that I liked and I started just cutting to make some fun embellishments.

Girls_toy_bagHandmade_Girls_toy_bagOnce I had my embellished pieces, I simply stuffed it all through my sewing machine to attach them to my bag. One thing to be careful is you don’t sew through both sides of your bag, otherwise you wont be able to open it! You can applique your embellished pieces on with fusible web, if you want. This step would help make it much easier. I was too impatient to do it the right way. 🙂

embellishging_toy_bagI ended up adding some fun ribbon for another texture and look to one of my bags. I had a little gap open space at one end of this design so I sewed on a button to make it prettier. Also, I used a lighter and slightly burned the ends of my ribbon to keep them from fraying.

DIY_diaper_bagI know these bags will get a lot of use, and I am excited to give them to her! If you saw my Handmade Gift Guide, we can add this little project to that list. I think this is a great, meaning full gift to give a child. Sticking in it something they love doesn’t hurt either ;).

Lessons From My Toddler

July 28, 2013 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Often I watch my little girl, and I find myself wanting to be more like her. Her beautiful innocence, joy, and outlook on life encourage my soul. A few lessons I’m learning from my toddler lately are…

Play hard

Love people

Laugh loudly

Do what you love often

Share your feelings

Sometimes I wonder why there is all this pressure to teach these little ones how to grow up and become independent. Maybe…just maybe, they have the right idea. Get your basic needs met, love, and be happy.

I am learning from my youngest. I hope you too are having a weekend to be quiet, reflect, and enjoy life.

Spring is here!

DIY Spring Decor

Spring is here!  Yesterday was the first day of spring, and we welcomed it excitedly!  We have a yucky virus circling our house right now, so we could not be more excited for some warmer weather and healthier days ahead!

In anticipation for spring, I came up with an easy paint project to do with my kids.  I want to quickly share with you how you can make this cute spring decor and have fun with your kiddos at the same time.

Find or cut some wood blocks.  My blocks are about 2″ x 2″ with a width of a little over 1″.  Sand them real good and then stick stickers on them to spell out spring.  Place one sticker per block (as you will see below).  I also bought a bag of wood eggs at Hobby Lobby for a couple of bucks to have my kids paint.

Once you are ready to paint, get yourself a cute artist.  My boys were busily playing with some new Legos, so only my little Reagan really wanted to participate.  She loves to paint, so she didn’t mind painting everything.  Paint right over the stickers.

After everything is painted, allow it all to dry completely.

Once it is all dry, peel the stickers off the blocks.  You will see the wood color of the block and how the stickers acted as a nice stencil for your project!

I then stained my blocks.  You don’t have to do this step, but I wanted my blocks and eggs to have a more muted color scheme.

I then sprayed everything with a clear gloss to create the shine and finished look.  Once they were dry, we were done!  Our spring blocks and eggs were complete!

This was such an easy way to incorporate my daughter’s artistic skills in our spring decor.  Having special pieces of my kids’ art around our house is so important to me.  If painting with a toddler is a new thing for you, it can seem crazy and overwhelming.  Don’t let it be!  Check out my ten tips on painting with toddlers, so you can enjoy and have fun with it! I know I will enjoy Reagan’s spring creations for years to come!

Happy spring friends!

I Love This Girl!

January 12, 2013 By Erica Deuel 2 Comments

For Reagan’s birthday we decided to keep it simple.

It was hard not throwing our usual birthday bash, but it surprised me how her day ended up being more about HER and perfect for a little two year old girl.

We started the day by greeting her at her crib singing Happy Birthday, and we ended it by singing her Happy birthday over cake.  It was such a sweet, low key day celebrating our sweet Reagan!

We love you Reagan!
