Spring Spoonful Lab Recap

May 5, 2014 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

craft_party_roomDo you know the feeling of when you dream, plan, and prepare for something for so long and then it’s over?

Part of you is relieved. Part of you may be sad. A lot of you might be tired. BUT, through it all you have a really happy high that you are proud of what you accomplished. I have been dreaming of hosting a Spoonful Lab in my house ever since I dreamed up the idea of hosting craft days last fall.

It’s no secret I love to create and help inspire others to do the same. I feel like if we use our imaginations and try new things, we can create beautiful things for less, and the process of creating can teach us so much. The blog allows me to do a lot of this, but hosting craft days where I can love on, poor in, get to know, and relate with fellow crafters and new friends in person!? That is a side of this whole blogging/business that just lights a fire in me. I love it. Until it is possible to bring you all to my house, I will still take my crafts to you through this blog and my Spoonful Tribe craft kits.

swag bagsWe started the day with my awkward intro/welcome (someday I will be able to nail one of these, but it hasn’t happened yet…luckily most everyone had a drink and pretty swag presents from me in hand as they listened ;)) and making two embroidered hoops. I demonstrated how I make mine, laid out a bunch of fun embellishments and my sewing machine and let everyone get their craft on.

craft_dayIt was so fun to see girls meeting, relating, and encouraging one another in such a short period. I love how these events bring crafting and being relational together. Too of my favorite things! It was so fun to see how some girls put their own spin on something I have created or go totally in their own direction!

I love seeing the originality and creativity come alive! I learn so much from being around other creative people. This was one inspiring day!craft_party_creations

oh_happy_day

heart_embroidery_hoopAfter making embroidery hoops, we ate lunch and then made some screen print type pillowcases. I loved everyone’s pillowcase! I had a third craft, but we didn’t even get to it. Everyone took it go. I was so happy to see everyone felt comfortable enough to go at their own pace, create what they wanted…and even felt comfortable to get down on my floor to craft!

craft party

crafty_friendsI am already dreaming of the next Spoonful Lab. I’m researching and pricing out the supplies I want to use. As soon as I have more information, I will be sure to let you all know. Until then, would you like some of my Swag!?

felt_flower_garlandsMaking each attendee a felt, flower garland was a true act of love. I hand cut each flower’s petals. I loved it.

Easy DIY Gift Bags

May 2, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

easy_gift_bag_tutorialDo you ever get tired of store-bought gift bags? I do! They are expensive. Most of the time they are used once and discarded. It just seems like a waste all the way around. But on the flip side, I love giving gifts and need something to put them in. So, I decided to make gift bags that could be used well beyond the gift.

With my Spoonful Lab approaching, I wanted to give all my attendees a great SWAG Bag. While I was out getting supplies, I found these canvas bags at Hobby Lobby. They came in a pack of three for $8. However by using the weekly 40% off coupon they come out to $1.60 each before tax. Can you even buy a large paper gift bag for $1.60?!? You feeling me now? This thing is a no brainer and will be a hit the next time you have gifts to give.

After bringing the bags home, I came up with a simple design to make them special and I want to share the process with you today.

I started with the blank canvases bags and a little acrylic paint.

canvas_bag_craftI cut a stencil out that I liked. I big heart is always easy, subtle but has a big message.

create_a_stencilI then dabbed paint into my stencil just like I did on my Shine Sweatshirt. The key is to go all over sporadically. Don’t start at one side and move across. To get the different levels of thickness of paint, dab all over randomly till it fills in.

stenciled_heartOnce the paint dries, you have a really pretty and fun gift bag that is as pretty as a screen print and cost you way less. I love how these bags are a gift alone, yet you can use them to give gifts. Add a little ribbon and a card or tag, and it’s ready to go!

gift_bag_tutorial

DIY_gift_bagThis idea of embellishing a pre-existing bag is something I love to do. If you like this idea of taking something premade and just embellishing it, you will like my Little Tote Bag and my Ruffled Fabric Bag. Isn’t it great how we can make something nice for less, if we just use our imagination!? I love it.

A Handmade Christmas

November 22, 2013 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

Christmas_craze_prepWhat is it about the Holidays that seems to get earlier and crazier every year!? Don’t get me wrong, I love this season. The colorful decorating, the swarms of family, the Christmas movies, the delicious food, hearing “Baby It’s Cold Outside!” 400 times. It really is a fun time. But it can also be so busy and stressful. I work so hard to not let it go there, but I inevitably have a meltdown or two during this season.

I’ve found that if I can carve time out of the rush and find ways to create I can recapture some of the peace and joy that I think the Christmas season is actually supposed to be about.

What about you? Could you use a night away from the craziness? What about a relaxed night to sit and create with some other ladies? Some of your creations could even cross off a few items from your gift or decor list!?

That’s why I’ve created my next Spoonful Lab – A Handmade Christmas. It may sound like just another thing to do in the midst of a busy time. It’s actually designed to be a really chill environment for you to catch your breath and have fun crafting with some other girls.

Handmade_Christmas_SpoonfulLab_signYou deserve a night out. Grab this one before it slips away!

Some of the ladies from my last Lab were kind enough to share a few words about their experience:

“Already looking forward to the next one!”

“A great way to stir your creative juices in a fun and intimate setting.”

“I had a fabulous time doing something I really love with the best host EVER!!!”

“This would make a great Girls Night Out!”

“Very fun, inspiring and very well-organized, every detail was taken care of and paid attention too! I am sure it made everyone feel very special.”

“Favorite part of the night was the freedom to create after the instructions were given and seeing all the different ideas.”

“I thought it was going to be too much time, but I could have stayed longer because it was so fun.”

“It is a great tutorial for non creative people longing to be crafty.”

“The most fun I have had crafting with new friends and finding old ones there too.”

Spots are limited and we already have a great group of ladies coming to join us. So what are you waiting for? Reserve your seat at Spoonful Lab – A Handmade Christmas today!

Action_ButtonI’m busily making some fun SWAG for you and my friend Sheila at Plum Doodles has contributed something as well. Check out her fun blog for more crafty inspiration! I hope to see you some of you soon!!

Recapping A Great Night

October 29, 2013 By Erica Deuel 18 Comments

mail holeI keep thinking about my Spoonful Lab and a huge smile comes across my face. It was so much fun. Yesterday, I showed you the ruffle aprons I made for it. Today, I want to show you the night.

girls_craft_partyWhen everyone arrived, they got to get a drink, browse my decor and supplies, and find a seat. They immediately got to mingle, talk and start creating a colorful fabric garland.

making_fabric_garland

making_a_fabric_garlandIt was open and relaxed and I couldn’t have been more pleased. I loved seeing how although I explained some things…everyone took my instruction and put their own twist on it. I am so glad everyone felt the freedom to create what they wanted.

making_garlandI love seeing the creative process take place, and being apart of it was just icing on the cake. These girls were creative and have skills!

i_am_beautifulWe enjoyed some amazing desserts made by my sweet friend and fellow blogger Libby at Lemon Grass and Green Tea. She really out did herself on the amazing and beautiful treats we got to enjoy!

fall_dessertsI shared some of my tips that I use and run through when I paint wood signs. I’ve walked you through a few techniques in different blog posts, but being live I got to babble and go in more depth. It was so fun to explain my creative process without having to worry about how many characters I said it all in. I loved it.

girls craft nightRust-oleum was so generous to supply the spray paint as the main supply item for our wood signs. The colors are gorgeous, and I loved seeing how almost every color I had was used.

hand_painted_signsDon’t feel bad if you missed out on this one. There is another lab coming! I am already dreaming and planning for my next event. On December 5th, I have a lab in Alpharetta, Georgia. Out of The Box Art Studio is generously giving me their place for the night to host this event.

Handmade_Christmas_SpoonfulLab600We are going to create a white feather wreath that is perfect for your Christmas decor and can even carry over into the new year for winter. We will also be creating some Christmas ornaments. This will be a great chance to get out with your girl friends and have some fun and laugh, after (I’m sure) a crazy Thanksgiving weekend. Sign ups are now live! Please go here to reserve your spot today!

Also, if you want to get your hands on some of the woods signs I made to explain my painting techniques, they are going up for sale in my shop this week. A lot have already been added.

I will have swag bags again for my attendees at the Handmade Christmas Lab. Here is what was in our last lab’s swag bag:

swag itemsEveryone’s earrings, magnets, bookmark (that also acted as our name tag), and card were slightly different. I think they were a hit. I am already planning the next bag of goodies. If you would like to get your hands on the swag items above, please leave me a comment below. I will randomly select a winner this weekend. I would also LOVE if you share my graphic for my Handmade Christmas party around.

Thank you so much for all your support!
