Painting Flower Pot Party Tips

July 1, 2016 By Erica Deuel 4 Comments

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Do you want to host a craft night? Or maybe you’re looking for a way to connect with other local women in your area. Either way, it’s the perfect season to host a painting flower-pot party.  You can walk away having hosting a craft night also getting to know others in your community better. That was the case for me.

Now, that we have been in Indiana for about 18 months we have established some community. It would be real easy to stay in my comfortable bubble and keep life safe. But I believe one of the best parts of life…is sharing it with others. I love heart to heart talks. I always walk away encouraged or challenged. It may be because I shared about my life or because I listened to others. I am working on my word for 2016 in having courage, so I started dreaming about sharing my ways with others and opening up my home for some craft classes here. If you’ve been following for a while, you know I did this a little in Georgia, which we called my Spoonful Labs.

One day, while walking through church I realized how awkward I am at meeting people in the hall. I feel like I often have a kid pulling on me or I’m watching one run after a friend ahead, so I’m quickly walking through the halls. Although I may say hi to 100 people, I don’t know much more about them at times and I want too. Often community takes putting yourself out there, so this was my way to try to make some more friends. You can do it too.

These_are_the_days

rustic_patio_decorI planned a craft that I could get the supplies for. Since it is summer, I thought painting flower pots would be fun and is a seasonal decor item that everyone can use. Even if you aren’t super crafty, you can paint a pot and wouldn’t feel bad putting it in your yard. I think planning a craft that is useful is key!

flower_pot_party_decorThe next step was getting guests! I ended up just posting a Facebook status asking if anyone else was interested in crafting and chatting. I was amazed at the responses I got! That led me to pricing out what my costs would probably be. I bought all the supplies, tablecloths, and drinks. I ended up asking everyone to bring a side to share. This gave away the part that stresses me out, kept the cost down, and kept me planning the part I most enjoy – the craft! I learned from hosting my last craft day.

creating_cards

summer_craft_partyI used brown painting paper to place on the tables and had extra for my guests to take a piece in the car home with them to keep their pot from getting the floor dirty. You will see why below on how the cars could get dirty.

spraypainting_flower_potsI gave instructions on how I painted a few pots that I had on my patio. One of the tips that was the biggest hit was to spray paint the pot a solid color first and then embellish. Please note: I sprayed all the pots with a waterproof sealant 48 hours before.

paintitng_flower_potA few facts that I either did or learned:

  • old soup cans make great water cups to wash brushes
  • place pencils out so guests can draw their design first to help space it on their pot
  • tell where your bathroom is before the middle of the event 😉
  • get a variety of shade, partial sun, to full sun needing flower plants
  • Try your paint before the event. I have painted LOTS of pots but bought a new brand of outdoor paint right before the event. It turned out to be watery.
  • Have lots of different brushes out in sizes and types.
  • If you have paint stencils, place those out too

paintitng_flower_potsI loved having a little surprise for my guests. All the flowers that were used as centerpieces on the tables were for them to fill their pots. How much more fun is it to take home a flower-pot with dirt and flowers in it than an empty one that might just sit in the garage!?

planting_flower_pots_partyAs guests arrived, we did a little mingling. We then ate as we talked. I gave a brief explanation on how to paint flower pots and told my guests they could make some greeting cards as they sit and wait for paint to dry as well. From there, it was just a fun night. I wanted it to feel more casual than an official event or class, so I didn’t talk for long.  They just crafted away. I decided I’d mingle and talk and be available to help anyone. This helped since I didn’t give lots of step by step instructions. It was so much fun! I think I was giddy all night long.

flower_pot_paint_partyNow, when I smile at the girls at church I feel like we both know each other a little better. Sometimes the first step to a friendship is just saying hello, but sometimes we need to branch out a bit more and share parts of our lives, talents, homes in serving or hosting or something. I am so glad I branched out.

summer_ladies_craft_partyTo all the beautiful girls that came, THANK YOU! I had a blast with you!

My biggest advice to anyone wanting to host a craft night with some friends is to not stress over the details. Ask for help with the parts that you don’t like. What people want most is to feel welcomed and comfortable. How clean your bathroom is doesn’t really matter.

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetDo you like crafting and chatting too!? I love deep talks, but sometimes a coffee date can intimidate me on getting to know someone without something in my hands. Crafting is my favorite way to talk with others. A fierce game of kickball with my kids and their friends is fun too. I plan to do that this weekend.

What is one of your favorite ways to hang out and talk with friends? I hope you have a great weekend!

Spring Spoonful Lab Recap

May 5, 2014 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

craft_party_roomDo you know the feeling of when you dream, plan, and prepare for something for so long and then it’s over?

Part of you is relieved. Part of you may be sad. A lot of you might be tired. BUT, through it all you have a really happy high that you are proud of what you accomplished. I have been dreaming of hosting a Spoonful Lab in my house ever since I dreamed up the idea of hosting craft days last fall.

It’s no secret I love to create and help inspire others to do the same. I feel like if we use our imaginations and try new things, we can create beautiful things for less, and the process of creating can teach us so much. The blog allows me to do a lot of this, but hosting craft days where I can love on, poor in, get to know, and relate with fellow crafters and new friends in person!? That is a side of this whole blogging/business that just lights a fire in me. I love it. Until it is possible to bring you all to my house, I will still take my crafts to you through this blog and my Spoonful Tribe craft kits.

swag bagsWe started the day with my awkward intro/welcome (someday I will be able to nail one of these, but it hasn’t happened yet…luckily most everyone had a drink and pretty swag presents from me in hand as they listened ;)) and making two embroidered hoops. I demonstrated how I make mine, laid out a bunch of fun embellishments and my sewing machine and let everyone get their craft on.

craft_dayIt was so fun to see girls meeting, relating, and encouraging one another in such a short period. I love how these events bring crafting and being relational together. Too of my favorite things! It was so fun to see how some girls put their own spin on something I have created or go totally in their own direction!

I love seeing the originality and creativity come alive! I learn so much from being around other creative people. This was one inspiring day!craft_party_creations

heart_embroidery_hoopAfter making embroidery hoops, we ate lunch and then made some screen print type pillowcases. I loved everyone’s pillowcase! I had a third craft, but we didn’t even get to it. Everyone took it go. I was so happy to see everyone felt comfortable enough to go at their own pace, create what they wanted…and even felt comfortable to get down on my floor to craft!

Spring is here, let’s get crafting!

March 22, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

I don’t remember a time where spring has been more anticipated than this year!? With such a crazy winter all over the country I feel like everyone is ready for a beautiful spring season. How about you? Well, to celebrate I come bearing a crafting opportunity for you. Wait, not one, but two crafting opportunities. You know you deserve it. You’ve been cooped up all winter. Bring in the spring with some gorgeous and fun spring decor. Let’s get crafting!

My first opportunity is April’s Spoonful Tribe. For those who are new around here, that’s where we box up all the supplies you need, included with a fun tutorial video, ship it all directly to your door and work together to create some handmade crafts. This month, I’m excited to share a beautiful Spring Wreath complete with these stunning satin flowers. It’s fun, it’s stretching, and it’s something you can be proud of as you decorate your home for the season. Go to my shop to order your craft box today. As always, you have to hurry. I have a limited number of boxes and they do sell out.

tribe cardYou’ll see in the shop that there are three choices – The Serving Spoon Tribe Box, The Tablespoon Tribe Box, and The Teaspoon Tribe Virtual Box. Each one is uniquely sized to your crafting needs. Choose the box that is right for you.

spring_wreathMy second opportunity is for my local metro Atlanta readers. Or possibly a reader that needs a Spring Break Road Trip! 🙂

I’m excited to announce my next Spoonful Lab. The Spoonful Labs are live gatherings where I lead participants through a crafting party. We hang out, have lots of laughs, while creating unique crafts together. I love love love these events and the opportunity to be face to face with some of you all. I’m switching it up this time though. Rather than an evening gathering I want us to have more time together. For this Lab, we will be crafting together from 10am-3pm on Saturday, April 26th. Just like the Tribe boxes, there are VERY LIMITED seats for this Spoonful Lab. Click here to sign up today and get ready for a blast at the end of April.

February’s Spoonful Tribe is here! (GREAT Valentine’s Day gift!)

January 21, 2014 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

February's SpoonfulTribeIt is always scary announcing something new. Especially, when it’s a dream of yours and there are risks involved.

I have been dreaming about helping others learn to be crafty and teaching some of my tricks for years and years. This blog birthed as a result and then my Spoonful Labs, and then my Spoonful Tribe. Slowly and surely my dreams of a stay at home mom, crafting and being able to love and encourage people around me that they can be crafty too have become my reality. I can’t thank you enough!

It still amazes me that my craft kits were sold out last month. Thank you, thank you! As we figure out our system, we plan to open up more and more craft kits. For now, it’s just me and my three sweet kiddos shopping for supplies and packaging them up. AND thanks to my talented husband, we can give you beautiful tutorial videos. ps. I am trying to get better on camera and lose some of the awkwardness it feels under lights and cameras pointed my way. 🙂

For this month, I am excited to share with you three crafts that I love! We will be making one beautiful satin flower lace head band (option to get the hair clip and hat as well), one heart greeting card & envelope, and one 3d gold glittered heart.

hair bow for all agesThe hair bow I have been making for years. I have made them as gifts, for my little girl, and even for a group of bridesmaids to wear down the aisle. Once you master the flower design, there are so many possibilities. I have glued these flowers to memo boards, bags, garlands, and even shirts. There are so many possibilities with this satin flower.

Spoonful_Feb_tribe_craft_kitWe are working hard to have all our boxes and videos ready to be shipped by February 8 this month. That means you could receive your kit in time to create them for Valentine’s gifts, decor, or an accessory to wear. Hint: Guys, if you have a crafty girl, this craft kit…would make an awesome gift! Let her create and have some “me time” while showing her that you appreciate her crafting skills and love!

ReserveMyBoxIf you want to host a craft night, bridesmaid shower, or birthday party where you’d need multiple kits-I’d love to help make that possible. We can package multiple Tribe Boxes so that all you need to do is put out some snacks and invite your friends for a memorable evening! You can order up to three Tribe Boxes through the membership options above. If you want more or would like to customize your party in a special way, just send us an email and we’ll go from there!

What are you waiting for? Let’s start getting creative.

*All memberships will be confirmed upon receipt and access to the Tribe Forum will arrive in your email within 48 hours. Crafts for the following month will be announced by the 21st.
