The Plush Bear Tutorial

November 29, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Plush_bear_pillowMy seven year old cannot wait to be in charge. As the first born, he often thinks he is in charge or a part of our parental team. He’s smart and his processing is often spot on, but I try to gently remind him (sometimes more strongly than others) that he is a kid and to enjoy it!

Being a parent is one of the best jobs in the world. It is also one of the scariest. We are tools being used to shape a little ones outlook on life, character, sense of security, joy, peace, happiness, and all the other important outlooks on life (not to mention caring for the basic needs such as clothing, food, health, and a warm place to sleep). It’s a big responsibility. We know it. We feel it; but in a lot of ways we are set up to succeed, if we are humans.

Did you happen to see the Disney Bears movie this summer? This is in no way a pitch or sponsor post for Disney. We saw it as a family and I just love that movie.

I watched anxiously as a mama bear tried to navigate her two young cubs through a scary world. She protected them. She struggled to keep them safe and fed, and was always on the watch for those that could hurt her babies.

I could relate. Ever since that movie, I have had a fascination with bears. It was time I got one of my own. Although I have three little cubs under my roof, we needed a fury friend too. Here is how my plush bear came into existence. Be warned! I now want to make a whole collection of furry wild friends, and you may want to too!

Drawing_on_fabricIt started as an idea to sketch a bear. Since we are in transition to our own place, I don’t have all my usual craft supplies on hand. I did have some creme fabric though, so I started sketching on that. I had some sharpies, pens, fabric markers, and I just started to go at it. Now, I had never drawn a bear before, but I simply googled “bear sketch” and there were pictures that popped up that gave me an idea of where to start. What would we do without google!?

DIY_bear_sketch

bear_outline

bear_drawingI filled in my sketch with quick strokes to create a fur look. My goal was for the bear to definitely look like a bear, but to look simple and cartoon like. I think I got that. I cut the extra fabric off around my sketch. Be sure to leave enough margin to sew your sketch to a back fabric. Also, try to envision what cuts would make for a good pillow. In hind sight, I might have just cut one big oval out rather than cutting in to have the head and front and back paws in separate sections. It made it a bit trickier to stuff, but you will see that below.

bear_sketchI then laid my sketch face down on a towel. I folded my towel over to have it be extra thick and used both sides of it to create the back of my bear. I decided to use a towel because it was a thick, sturdy material, but it also had a fur like texture. You could use any fabric or left over material.

If I had my sewing machine, I would have then quickly sewn around to join the towel and bear sketch together. Note: Be sure to leave a two inch opening, so you will be able to flip your new pillow right side out and stuff. I forgot that step and had to go back and cut some slits.

Since I didn’t have my sewing machine, I did a quick in and out stitch by hand to join the materials together. It did not have to be perfect, since my main stitch was going to be on the outside.

This is a pretty mindless craft at this point. I had one of my favorite movies playing as I stitched. Can you guess the movie!?

DIY_stuffed_bear_pillow

pillow_stuffing

pillow_stuffing_to_shapeI hand stitched a blanket stitch around the outside of my bear with yarn. I hadn’t done this is a long time, but by a simple Google search, I was able to see some pictures and learn how to complete this stitch. I love how it reinforces my bear, but also adds another texture and it looks so cute! Once the bear was stitched and stuffed to the thickness I liked, I simply stitched it close.

sewing_pillow_shut

bear_pillowThe last step was to admire and enjoy him! I am pretty obsessed with this little guy. I now want to make him some furry friends and use bright colored towels to make some creative rabbits, foxes, and maybe even a giraffe! Oh the possibilities! The most expensive craft supply was the bag of Poly-Fil. I used a whole bag. Depending on the size of your pillow you may need less or more.

I took my little bear around the farm for a photoshoot. What a good model! 🙂

DIY_bear_pillowWhat an inexpensive, fun craft to make! They would make great Christmas or holiday presents! Do you know a young child that would love a fun pillow?

bear_pillow_tutorialIf you have been following along with our move announcement, why we uprooted our family from sunny Atlanta to less-sunny northern Indiana, and how we have been adjusting, I would love for you to know we have found a house! We will be moving from our sweet friends’ basement into our own home in two weeks! Thank you for all the prayers, encouraging, and sweet comments as we have been transitioning to hooser territory!

Easy Carpet Bag Tutorial

September 8, 2014 By Erica Deuel 3 Comments

rug_bagI find it funny how many items in our day-to-day life were made for one thing, but with a little imagination and ingenuity can be used for something completely different.

Your cell phone can be used as a camera, calculator, a GPS, or about a million other things besides a phone. I’ve heard dental floss can be used for fishing. A bandana can be used as a fashionable headpiece or a practical face mask… bank robbers anyone?

So why can’t a piece of carpet be used to make a bag? Well, I’m here to tell you that it can.

Bohemian_Rug_craft

These beautiful rugs can be found at Walmart for $4.97 each. Incredible price, right!? I didn’t need a rug, so I stood there staring and thinking what could I possibly do with these beauties. You might remember my Rug Pillow. I decided I could always do that, so I picked three rugs out and quickly placed them in my cart.

After I walked around another aisle and saw the burlap/lace ribbon, I knew exactly what I wanted to create. Don’t we all need a HUGE carpet-bag? I love the thickness the rug creates as a nice sturdy bag, without needing a reinforcing liner. They are bright, beautiful and full of texture. Here is how I made my bag.

I started by folding one of my rugs in half and cutting the tag off it. Next, I folded the ribbon in half of what I thought would be a good length for handles. I wanted both sides of the handles to show the fun lace print, and by folding the ribbon in half you accomplish that and make them extra sturdy.

DIY_Bohemian_bagI sewed the ribbon sides together and then pinned them to where I thought they would look right on my bag. I then tried it on to make sure I liked the length and placement of the handles.

sewing_bag_straps

DIY_simple_bag

measuring_bag_strapsI was so excited. I almost rotated the bag around to make it a more horizontal bag rather than a vertical bag, but I decided I wanted the length this way as I have other bags that fit the horizontal shape. The vertical shape is different. I sewed the handles in place on both sides of the bag, so I had two handles.

sewing_straps_onto_a_bagI tried stuffing my bag into my machine to sew the two sides of the rug together, but it was too fat. I was left needing to sew the sides by hand. It wasn’t hard, since there were only two sides needing sewn together (no need to sew the fold side).

I found a thick, sharp needle and used some embroidery floss to stitch up the side and bottom. When my floss ran out, I simply tied the end of the embroidery floss to another piece and kept going.

hand_sewing

hand_stitch

sewing_a_bagOnce my side and bottom were sewn, I flipped my new bag inside out and it was complete! This bag is huge! To show you the size, I took a few pictures of it with some of my favorite items.

simple_carpet_bag

carpet_bag_tutorial

DIY_carpet_bagMatt jokes that the kids could use it for a three legged race. They could! I love the massive size and plan to use this bag a lot. If you wanted your bag to be smaller, you could easily cut your rug before you sew up the sides. I think this idea would also be great for laundry hampers or storage bins. I’ve seen poufs made from rugs too. The possibilities are endless when we use our imaginations and inspire one another to try new things.

Isn’t Reagan just the cutest? She wanted to help me model the bag (and yes we are still wearing our Love is Patient Shirts). I wasn’t planning on using these pictures, but they were too cute not to share.

Would you ever make something from a rug? I’m playing around with what I should do with my other two pretty rugs I bought. Maybe more bags? Maybe new pillows? Or maybe something complete different!

I hope you had a great weekend! Thanks so much for stopping by!

The Perfect Newborn Burp Cloth (tutorial)

February 3, 2014 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

DIY_burp_clothsSo many cute things come with babies.

Cute clothes. Cute blankets. Cute bedding. Cute noises. Cute faces. And ohhh the cute baby chub! All my babies had some sweet wrinkles. Loved it. One thing that is NOT so cute about babies is all the stuff that comes out of them. Their mouths for one can leave spit up that smells, stains, and is slimy yuck.

It’s part of the deal though, so we handle it. When I had my Reagan, I came up with this simple flannel burp cloth that I love. It is all I used with her. They still look beautiful today too. She uses them as blankets for her baby dolls.

Three years later, I am still making these burp cloths. Not for my Reagan anymore, but as baby shower presents. They are one of my favorite gifts to give new moms.

I’m going to show you the basic steps for how to create these burp cloths and then give you a few more reasons why I love them (as well as tell you some other baby items that I love to make and give).

When I find a flannel I love, I usually buy a yard regardless. But if you want to make one burp cloth, ask for 1/3 of a yard. I think that size makes a nice fat burp cloth. So many burp cloths are too thin or too short and don’t do the job of protecting you from mayhem.

flannel projectI then iron all around my 1/3 of a yard fabric. I fold about 1/4″ to 1/2″ seem down and iron it to hold it in place. I then fold the fabric over in half and pin all the way around it.

ironing flannel

DIY flannel burp clotheI simply sew around the edge of the now rectangle shape two times. There are foots that you can put on most sewing machine that will sew two lines at once. I just sew around two times. You can also personalize your burp cloth by adding a shape or an initial to sew on as well.

applique burp cloth

sewing_a_burpclothAfter you sew everything in place and remove the pins, it is done! I think this project is so simple, yet a fun way to give a personalized gift. There are so many different flannel patterns available to give this simple project different looks. You can get fun colorful patterns or basic geometric modern styles. Whatever your taste or the theme of a baby shower may be! Of course, I am always drawn to the bright colorful fabrics! 🙂

DIY_flannel_burp_clothsI think this burp cloth is the perfect burp cloth. The fabric is so soft. It is very absorbent. Here is the best part! The bright colors and patterns hide stains! So often the popular white cloth diaper type burp cloths get stained and gross. These flannel burp cloths hide all that and are more forgiving.

perfect_newborn_burp_cloth

handmade_baby_presentI love to add a few personalized homemade items to my baby shower gifts. I usually get something off the registry and then make a few things to go with it. Some of my favorite items to make are fun gift bags, chiffon flowers for the perfect newborn headband, and even simple wood signs.

homemade_gift_bagWhat about you!? Do you love to make items for your baby shower gifts as well?

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you have a great week and get to imagine!

Foster Love

December 31, 2013 By Erica Deuel 39 Comments

foster_loveThere are moments in life that can be hard to explain. You may be surprised, nervous, proud, thrilled, or crushed. Sometimes the only way to appreciate the moment is to have walked the path to get there.

You have largely walked our foster care journey with us. I started the year by talking about the changes we would face as we sold our house, moved, and trained to become foster care parents. It only seems right to end the year by telling you about where we are with it today.

Please forgive me from detouring from my usual DIY posts (even though there is one hidden in here) as I share a little from my heart.

We completed our foster care training at the end of August and were certified shortly after that. From there things fell silent.

The waiting was hard and got discouraging. We moved for this, yet we were not being used. After some discouraging weeks and starting to process out loud with friends and Matt about our next steps (and if we should get certified in another county as well), God heard and responded to my cries. We were blessed with a little baby girl.

foster_parent_loveI wish I could tell all the details and show her beautiful face, but the most important part of this experience is she changed me. In the nine days we had with this sweet preemie, I fell in love hard.

I surprised myself with how quick the mothering nature was just there. I loved her. I wanted to protect her. I was defensive of her, and not wanting pushy people to ask why I had a baby that (obviously) didn’t look like me. I never knew my heart could grasp such an experience and love so hard so quick. My heart grew and was stretched in ways that I still can’t really explain.

It has taken till today, for me to be able to process this experience enough to share. Just over a week ago, I bawled as I handed her back to her foster mom. We just did respite for her for a small period. My heart still hurts and is grieving the loss.

It’s a crazy thing to know from the start that I would be giving her back, and yet still fall so hard. As I was up all hours of the night feeding and caring for this baby, I found myself praying and whispering truth into her ears. I can’t shake how she was born into a system and her life is seemingly up in the air. God knows the plan, but in my flesh I have a hard time watching an innocent child be born into a life of craziness (and here my kids were born into a loving home with two parents). It’s not fair.

When we were having our kids we planned and prepared with new clothes and painted bedrooms and this babe had none of that. I wanted her to have something for her, so I sent her home with two outfits and I sewed her a quick receiving blanket with her name embroidered on it.

Here’s how I made her blanket:

I simply took a yard of pretty fabric and laid it on top of a fleece blanket. I trimmed off the excess fleece. I sewed around the edge a few times to bind the two fabrics together. I then laid tape on top of the new blanket, so I would have a guide to sew lines down the blanket to give it a quilt type feel. After sewing those lines, I pulled up the tape and it was done.

fleece_receiving_blanket

baby_blanketIt was quick, yet it was something for her. Something that was not a hand me down or bought used. It was something that could go with her no matter where she ends up.

I love this little girl, and I can not lie… I might have cried writing this post. My heart misses this little love, but I need to trust God has a plan for her. I know she has already changed me and my heart. I know we are on a path that we are meant to be. I am so happy and excited to do this again. As much as it hurt to say goodbye, I am so glad I got the gift of loving this sweet girl at Christmas.

Half way through the week I looked at Matt and said I knew I would be a mess when she left, and he said that meant I was doing a good job. I should be. She deserves that kind of love. The kind of love my kids get everyday.

LOVEIn 2013, a dream of mine became a reality. I pray that my heart can do this over and over again. Thank you for being on this journey with us!
