Transitioning

November 15, 2014 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

packing_a_moving_truckWe have moved!!

In my last moving post, I shared how things were moving fast, and we were trying to hang on. In some ways it’s hard to believe we actually got moved and are now in Indiana! We couldn’t have done it without the help of so many friends and family. Last Thursday we emptied our house and on Friday we closed on the house and started our travels north.

Everything in me knows we lived in that house for 18 months, so we could get to know and love on one very special boy. It was sad to leave. On top of leaving this house, unlike our last house move, we were moving hundred of miles from most of our family and friends.

You know that feeling when you think you can’t cry anymore, but then you do cry more? I feel like I lived that for a week as we slowly said our good byes.

road_trip

happy_couple

moving_caravanWe got to Indiana and were welcomed at an amazing country home with sweet, sweet friends and with a crew of strong guys to unload our stuff into storage.

We immediately started house shopping. It felt like we just ran a marathon and should crash, but we couldn’t. We didn’t.

country_girlAfter a few days, we started getting into a new routine. Matt started his new job at Mission Point Community Church. We came off “fall break” and started school back up. Oh, the beauty of homeschool!

We have already enjoyed a couple light snows, and I think the kids have finally gotten used to wearing shoes and coats.

playing_in_snowNow, that we have officially been here for a week, I am coming up for air and finding rest. Without having a home, I can just enjoy my kids in a fun way without a huge to-do list. There’s definitely still some transitioning and learning, but I am enjoying it. Ask me again in January, but for now I have loved wearing layers. I love the small town. I feel so welcomed and supported as people I have never met are reaching out to me. I know we are where God wants us, and I have so much peace and strength in that fact.

I’m sure there are hard days ahead, but I’m living with the people who mean the most to me. We are on adventure. We have so much to be thankful for. Perspective does a lot for attitude. We have had some funny moments along the way though and want to share 10 tips for moving your family across the country. Enjoy these truthful moments.tips_for_moving

10.  Have family and friends that can pack a moving truck and accept Chick-fil-a nuggets as payment.

9.    Let the whole “we’re not buying any more pull-ups” thing slide for another month or three.

8.    When you start packing your 2nd moving truck, give up hope and consider burning all of your possessions.

7.     Make sure to schedule your move 700 miles north the week that the Polar Vortex is going to hit.

6.     When hubby is driving Uhaul towing one of your vehicles, make sure to follow him, so you can let him know every time he drifts into another lane. He loves that.

5.     Eat at every Chick-fil-a that you pass; it may be your last for a while.

4.     Convince yourself as the skies turn from bright blue to a hazy grey that it must just be an overcast day.

3.     Enlist the church to unpack your truck into storage while you are out house shopping. This will save your back when you need to move again in a month.

2.     Find friends that will graciously let you live in their basement while you are homeless…and keep giving your dogs drowsy pills so they give a good first impression.

1.     Figure out before you move that Old Navy does not ship winter coats to PO Boxes.

craft_suppliesWith more down time than I am used to, the reality that all my craft supplies were packed in storage hit hard. No worries, this small town has a Wal-mart and I was able to get some supplies and have picked my crafting back up. I can’t wait to show you what I have been working on. Hopefully, my next post will be back with the usual tutorial crafting.

Thank you so much for caring, journeying with us, helping to dream big and use our imaginations in every area of our life. This life is an adventure. Love you friends!

Moving Fast, Hanging On

October 27, 2014 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

Life is moving fast.

I feel like I need to retire my flip-flops and replace them with running shoes to keep up.

You know I love the country life. Every time I visit my sister in Arkansas it has been good for my soul. My last visit was no different. Two weeks ago, I drove with another one of my sisters and three kids 10 hours to Arkansas to meet our new niece….and hug the rest of her fam.

newborn_photoshootIt was a short trip, but so worth it. I got to catch up with two of my sisters (I’m one of nine kids), hug my nieces, and unplug from all the house showing craze.

We went fishing.

We gathered wild flowers.

We rode ponies.

We stayed in our pjs.

We played games.

and we laughed a lot.

kids_riding_poniesWe came home from Arkansas and received an offer on our house the next day. We went back and forth ironing out the offer and the fine details, but the end result was a contract on our house. We celebrated with ice cream out, like everyone should!

familyThere was such an immediate feeling of relief and a huge weight lifted from our shoulders.

We were so thrilled to have the house selling step of our move behind us. It was and is a complete blessing. So, we packed up our little family for another trip and headed out the next day for Indiana. It was time to house shop!

shine_brightOur kids were rock stars to get placed back in the van for another 10 hour road trip.

sleeping_babeTo make a long story short, we needed to find a house that weekend to be able to seamlessly move from our house in Georgia to a new house in Indiana. We saw a lot of old houses that needed a lot of work. I loved so many of them. But the amount of work that was going to be required in fixing up these 100+ year old farm homes with sloping floors started to get discouraging. It was cold. It was wet. And we were tired.

coldWe did find the PERFECT home though. Only to realize it is under a contingency contract. I walked through this beautiful old home (that has already been completely remodeled) and fought tears. I loved it, but it seemed impossible. It was already claimed.

old_homeI walked out of that house and had a huge cry. It was cold and rainy. I was wearing flip-flops and I was emotionally exhausted. BUT then God stepped in. Friends encouraged us, loved on us, gave us safety in hugs, and Matt bought me a new comfort blanket to warm my toes…and as I was praying through tears…a rainbow literally appeared for mere seconds.

colorful_blanketsIt was hard to come home without a house. I have buried myself in packaging up Love is Patient shirts and starting the packing of boxes.

mail

packing_boxesYou know though, I feel so blessed. I had that cry and it was like my final release of me.

Jesus knows the perfect house for us, even if we don’t. I’m ok with that. I have my little family, we are on a path of following God’s call on our lives, and we have all our basic needs met.

Including an incredible family who is welcoming us into their home in Indiana until we find a place of our own.

So, I will continue to pack up this house and prepare to move in a short 11 days.

we_are_blessedThank you for continuing to journey with us. You all have always been such an encouragement to me. Thanks for doing life with us.

If you feel inclined, please pray for us during this transition. Most days are really good. We are trusting and have a complete peace we are doing what we are supposed to. The small details of packing boxes (not knowing what room/place they will end up) is hard in the midst of starting to say good bye to friends and family here (which we don’t have a lot of answers for to all their questions). We are praying that we live “love is patient” with each other as we step over boxes and rest our tired bodies and souls in a place we are starting to let go of.

Love you all! To follow this journey more closely, my instagram (@ericadeuel) is my daily blog.

The Good Things He Planned For Us Long Ago

August 28, 2014 By Erica Deuel 19 Comments

Disclaimer: The amazingly talented and beautiful Christina DeVictor with Someplace Wild took these pictures for us. Although she is not accepting family shoots right now, we were privileged to get a shoot with her at the beach. You will love her work. Talent all over that incredible sister in law of mine 🙂

There are moments in life where we can see the bigger picture. We can look back and see God’s hand in our story. It may not always look or feel like it in the day to day, but God does have a purpose for each of our lives. My amazing husband can say this so much better than I, so I am going to turn over today’s post to Matt. Enjoy!

************************************************

Wait, didn’t you all just move? Yes.

And you’re moving again? Yep.

Why in the world would you do that? I’m so glad you asked…

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

In the fall of 2009, I was the Executive Director of a non-profit ministry called Broken Voices. We traveled around the country creating films and live events in the hope of awakening college students to dream big and act now with the passions God had placed inside them. We shared the truths that had become meaningful to us from that Ephesians 2:10 passage and sought out people who were looking for their purpose in this life.

It was a crazy adventure.

We packed up our crew in 2 passenger vans and hit the road almost exactly 5 years ago. Working to get the very best last minute deals, we’d often drive into a city and hit a hotel that I had booked on Priceline as we were pulling into town. Being that we had scheduled a 3 month tour we decided there was no way we could travel without our families. My partner Andrew, his wife Emily and their two young boys, Erica, Caleb, and at the time, baby Jeremiah, made the trek with me in my mother-in-law’s 15 passenger van. Seriously, four adults and four boys in car seats, canvasing the country stopping at every college campus that would have us. We had three amazing crew members who followed in the van behind us towing all of our supplies in a big white trailer. We had the privilege of hosting 50 events that year for over 20,000 college students. I will never forget those days.

Most stops we’d pull in and out of town in 24-36 hours to head to our next event. However, there were a couple of stops on the tour that had several events all in close proximity over the course of a week. We coveted these moments because it meant we could settle in for a few days and be off the road. One of those moments of respite was found in a small town in northern Indiana known as Winona Lake. As I recall, we spent 7 or 8 days there while hitting up tour spots in the surrounding cities. At the time, I didn’t know what it was, but there was something special about that place. We fell in love with the town and told people back home that it was one of our favorite stops on the whole tour.

Deuels-3
The following summer I traveled with Andrew to be a part of a youth conference in Cedarville, OH. We led one of the morning sessions and were then taken out to lunch with some of the conference staff. Apparently there is nothing to eat in Cedarville because our driver lead us on what felt like a 3 hour tour to find a Mexican restaurant. Trying to take advantage of the spare time I now had on my hands, I introduced myself to the man sitting behind me in our van. He was there to lead the evening session, which instantly in conference world meant he was a much bigger deal than me and Andrew. Everyone knows that questionable speakers get the morning sessions and the big guns are brought in for the night sessions. Night sessions are usually when Jesus shows up. Morning sessions everyone is still sleepy eyed from last night’s amazing life changing session.  So, I knew that this guy must be legit. My senses did not fail me. In about 15 minutes of talking to this Zambian born man named Kondo Simfukwe, I knew we were going to be life long friends.

I learned that Kondo was in the process of leading a small team of people to launch a church.

“Where?” I asked.

“Winona Lake, Indiana.” he replied.

I flipped out.

We spent the rest of our time together sharing vision, passion and connecting on so many exciting dreams for the future of our respective organizations. We committed to staying in touch and doing our best to encourage one another in our work from afar. Every few months one of us would call the other just to check in and make sure the dreams were still alive and well. Then in the summer of 2012 I was privileged to bring Kondo down to Atlanta to speak at one of our events. At that time, I knew that God was preparing me and my family for a season of change. I didn’t know what that was going to look like but I knew it was coming. After Kondo’s session, we spent the evening swapping stories with some other close friends. I don’t know if it was God speaking to me or just a thought that He placed in my mind, but I had a very clear sense that I was supposed to help Kondo and his church in some way. I didn’t know what that would look like but it seemed to me that given the opportunity we could work very well together.

Deuels-8
Fast forward to summer 2013 and thanks to a friend’s wedding and a Broken Voices event both in northern Indiana, I found myself hanging out in Winona Lake with Kondo and his family for a few days. My family got the opportunity to finally attend Mission Point Community Church and experience the thing Kondo had been dreaming about in that van ride across Ohio 3 years prior. It was a special experience. While there I was able to work with the Mission Point team on some video projects. I suppose I did an okay job because they invited me back a few months later. At that point, they hired me to help create a video production set-up and train a group of volunteers to make video a regular thing for the church. We set up a contract for me to work part time from Atlanta for 2014. I have been able to work on their videos and website from home and  once a quarter we load our family up for the 10 hour road trip to work long weekends with their team. It’s been some of our favorite moments of this past year.

Deuels-5
Then in June, the phone rang and Kondo was on the other end with a full time offer for our family to move there and for me to serve as the Executive Director of Mission Point. We traveled back up to Winona Lake 4th of July weekend to spend time processing the offer and ironing out the details. Coming home we were at peace believing that this is what God has planned for us to do. As we’ve looked back at the last five years and all that we have experienced we have recognized moment after moment and conversation after conversation where the Lord was graciously preparing our hearts for this transition.

Our one condition to starting the moving process was waiting for things to be settled with our foster son. About three weeks after we returned home, he was moved to his Great Aunt’s home. So, the doors are open and all signs are pointing north. At this point, we are just waiting on God’s timing for the sale of our house.

Deuels-13
It’s exciting.

It’s scary.

It’s bittersweet.

We are leaving behind most of our family and a lot of our friends. The Atlanta area has been home to us for our entire lives.

Deuels-12
But in all the emotions of this huge transition there is peace and there is hope.

Peace that we are making the right decision. And hope that in some small way our lives will make a difference for our new community in Indiana.

Winona Lake is located in Kosciusko county. 70,000 people live in Kosciusko and it has been estimated that 50,000 of those people are not connected to a local church. 50,000 people that need to experience the love of Jesus. That is the reason that Kondo and his team started Mission Point and we are excited to join them in that vision. Being a safe, inviting, and encouraging community that will welcome anyone in to experience a God who deeply loves them and desires great things for their lives.

Deuels-22
The great thing about Erica’s blog and the community that she has developed here, is that you all get to come along with us for the ride! Imagine Erica with a new house to set up and decorate – it’s like a blank canvas of potential for her. I’m sure we will all benefit from the ridiculously cool things she will create and share along the way.

Deuels-24
Thank you for journeying along with our family. Thank you for the tons of encouragement that you give to my wife which also means so much to me.

I hope that in some way our story is encouraging to you. I pray that you are inspired to seek out the good things that God planned for you long ago. If you haven’t already found what that is for you, I promise that it’s there. It probably won’t even require a cross country move. It might even be something in your own backyard. I don’t know. What I do know is that it is there…somewhere deep down inside of you.

A special plan.

A unique purpose.

You can start by whispering a simple prayer to God and ask Him to show you the plan and purpose he has for your life. Then get out there and just try a bunch of stuff. Give, serve, care, invest and somewhere you will find an unmistakable sweet spot and a group of like minded people you can lock arms with in the journey. Do me a favor, as you work to find the good thing that God has for you, share it with us! We’d love to be a part of your journey too.

Deuels-35Erica again 🙂 He’s pretty amazing huh!? I don’t know how I got so lucky with him choosing me, but I am forever grateful. Friends, I married up :). I am going to try to get him to post more often as he has such a voice and often can speak my heart much better than I. So, Indiana! A big move! Now you can see why I slowly have been processing with my GA Embellished Pillowcase and my Adventure Awaits Wall Art.

Thank you so much for walking through this journey with us!

Our Journey Continues

August 23, 2014 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

movingYes, it is true.

We are moving!

For those of you who have been following our journey for sometime, you might remember we had a hard time selling our last home so we could buy and move into this house, and that was only one short year ago.

Exterior_FrontI knew the minute we stepped into this house that it was for us. In a short recap, we moved out of our little 70+ year old ranch (you can see video tour here) to pursue becoming foster care parents.

We knew we needed a slightly bigger house, and one that didn’t continually have a project. As much as we love big DIY projects, we knew that for this season in our lives we needed the ability to focus on our kids, and the kids in our home rather than stress over builds. So, we bought a brand new house. In so many ways, I have loved buying a new home. The tall ceilings, beautiful clean/straight walls, smell, picking out hardwoods, a bath tub that didn’t have stains, etc. But, it wasn’t totally an “us” house either.

It is probably a little fancier than our taste, but it was right. We could have moved anywhere since we homeschool and Matt was currently working out of the house. We were probably a realtor’s nightmare when shopping for this house. The location and school district didn’t matter, the house was all we cared about.

DCIM100GOPRO

DCIM100GOPRO

This house allowed for us to spread out, live a crazy beautiful life, walk to a neighborhood pool and playground for the first time in our lives, a street with lots of kids (including another homeschool family!?) where the highlight of the summer is to play outside riding bikes and playing soccer in the cul-de-sac together. It’s been so great.

We have slowly made this big, formal house our home. I look at these pictures and in some ways can’t believe everything we got done in a year, but then in other ways I see all the dreams and plans I had that won’t come to be. The boys will get their bunk bed hopefully in the next house.

So, why are we moving?

Ever since our very best friends (who we ran a non-profit with) moved to California, we feel like we have been on a path to seeing what God had next for us. Through it God has been so faithful with giving us work, providing joy, and using us in this “waiting” period. We knew when we bought this house it wouldn’t be for long, but we also had a peace and knew it was the right thing to do. We were taking faithful steps pursuing becoming foster care parents.

I look back on this year and see that the most meaningful thing we did in this house was care for our foster son. If we hadn’t been in this house, we wouldn’t have gotten trained in our county or been here to receive the call and love on that sweet boy for five months. He is why we were here.

DCIM100GOPRODoors have opened and we have a peace about what is next for us. It’s a big change, so there are lots of different emotions but God is so good and we have a peace about the calling to what God has next for us.

FamilyShot_Cropped

Our house is officially on the market. We are praying for God’s perfect timing and a buyer to come along as well as the perfect house being available next for us. Will you pray with us? I am excited to tell you more in my next post. I hope you enjoyed our little home tour.

If you have any questions about the rooms, please leave a comment and ask. Most of everything shown has a tutorial buried in this blog somewhere. 🙂
