Our Kitchen

October 16, 2012 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

In my last post, I showed you my bedroom and said I thought I needed to give you a tour of our house.  Here is the first part of your tour.  It is our kitchen and “green room” in a new tab on the blog titled Our Home.

I will slowly add more rooms to this tab, so you can see our whole house.  Two pictures that didn’t make it into the official house tour are here for your eyes only!  🙂

After our huge road trip this summer, we all fell in love with cactus.  I do not have a green thumb and have been able to keep these little plants on my counter alive for over a month now!!  That is a record.

That huge pile of paper would be our mail.  That is so embarrassing, but I’m just keeping it real on here.  It is now way larger than that, as I took these pictures last week.  I know there is mail in there from before our trip.  I should move that pile to the top of my to do list.

Click on over to the Our Home tab at the top and enjoy some prettier views of our kitchen.

Thank you so much for stopping by!  I hope you are having a great week!

The Six Month Bedroom Makeover

October 12, 2012 By Erica Deuel 13 Comments

I am so excited to share with you the process of our bedroom makeover.  This process began in May, and we are now in October.  Life with three young kids might be part of this six month process, but i like to think it was more about dreaming and creating to MAKE our favorite things ourselves.

I look at this picture and I am blown away that our room used to have a more “haphazard” and “messy” feel.

The dark wood headboard created a much darker feel in our room.  We originally painted this room with  a $5.00 can of oops paint from Home Depot five years ago.  We didn’t love the color, but we were planning on moving and knew a “clean” coat of paint would be more appealing than the dingy beige we had before.  While painting the green, we decided to use another left over paint to create a brown accent wall.

It was a mess, and as we have stayed in our house and not moved its been a goal of ours to fix up this space.  Unfortunately, it has been low on the list of priorities.  We finally had time and space to start fixing it up, and it started with this beautiful mirror my husband made for me for Mother’s Day.

That is the one of the best presents I have ever received!  For our eight year anniversary, we gave each other a new bed.  We upgraded our queen to a huge king size with nice firm mattresses.

This new bed helped me complete my king size rag quilt.  I made it on a small budget and yet it has an anthropology, bright, fun feel without costing a fortune.  It has become one my most prized projects ever.

Our room is small with only one wall without windows or doors.  The only way for us to both have a dresser is to have two tall dressers side by side.  Still trying to fix this wall, although we are attacking the piles on top.

We needed a new headboard, since we only bought a metal frame with our new mattress.  You got a glimpse of the DIY headboard that we created on last week’s Friday Project Spotlight.

I have posted a few pictures on Twitter and Facebook this week showing glimpses of how it looks hanging in our room!  I have been so excited to share with you all of these pictures.

We picked Rain Water from Behr paint as our new room’s color.  With all the bright color in our mirror, quilt, and headboard, we knew we needed a subtle color on the walls to let everything else pop.

It took two coats, but we got it painted!  I am a mess when it comes to painting. Fortunately there’s no shortage of blue tape and brown paper to help keep me in line!

Oops!  Who paints in jewelry!?!

The color goes on looking pretty close to white.  I was at first a little nervous that it was too light, but as it dried it became a really pretty light blue.  I love the color!

Seeing my headboard on the wall might have made me just a little giddy!  I have a feeling this room could become one our more used rooms.  🙂

Everything really does pop more and have a more feminine touch without hopefully feeling too girly!  Caleb was pleased that we chose blue for the walls since his “daddy has to sleep under a ‘girl’s’ blanket.”

That shag/t-shirt rug I got on clearance at Kohls sometime this summer for $4.00!?!  I bought it in a heartbeat and didn’t even know what I would do with it.  I just knew it was a great deal and I loved it.  Don’t you love finds like that?

Another find for me was that purple/turquoise chair.  Do you remember seeing it in my Ohio Auction post?  It was a great free find that looks so much better with a coat of spray paint.

We all love to hang out in our room now!  It is so fun that every one of our rooms is starting to feel like “us” and as “complete” as crafters can ever say.  I think I need to post a tour that is more professional than our last home tour.

Thank you so much for checking in on my Friday Project Spotlight!  Do you have a big project you are in the midst of working on?

Update:  I have since added some new throw pillows to our bed, and I love all the color they bring!

House Tour…messy style

July 23, 2012 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

You know how your house is right after you get back in town from a trip?  I know for us, it is pretty much a mess.  We have our bags from the trip half unpacked and strings of life strung all over.  I am going to give you a brief house tour…messy style.

I got back last night from my 56 hour Ohio Trip.  I left Friday morning about 8:00am with my boys.  I drove my mom (who worked all the previous night till-7:00am Friday down at Northside Hospital), my brother, Gus, and my two young boys to Ohio.  We were there for my grandparents auction on Saturday, and we drove home yesterday.  It was a quick trip, but more of that later.

Right now, I want to take you through my house at its current state.  I took these pictures about an hour ago, and there was no prep or staging of any items.

Here is my the den (should be dinning room but is kind of a toy/craft room)…

Included in this room is my five-year old, Caleb’s, office.  He wanted a desk like his dad and me, so he made himself a small desk.  We don’t have a toy room, so he has set it up right by my window bench and pillows (which is right by my desk).  He gets dressed most mornings and comes and sits here before doing anything else.  Often in the afternoons for “nap time”, he works quietly in his office as I work at mine.  I love this kid!

In that picture, it is pretty much “set” up.  You should see it after Reagan gets a hold of it.  Attached to this room is the living room.  Here is a floor view of it looking out from the kitchen.

Most of the boys small toys came out of their room today.  No joke.  I think all the superhero costumes were worn at some point, and “guys” (action figures) were getting strung from rope like a zipline across this room.  I was so tired from the weekend, that the “mess” never even registered with me really till now.  That realization gave me the idea for this post.  I was so happy they were all happy and didn’t need me to entertain them play-by-play (as some most days are), that the mess just unfolded.

After leaving the living room, you go down the hallway to our three bedrooms.  My house is a small 60+ years old ranch with three bedrooms.

So, the hallway might have two of the sleeping bags we took to Ohio strung out in it.  We took sleeping bags, since my grandparents’ spare beds were getting auctioned off.  Hence, probably part of the reason for my “tiredness”.  I’m a lot older since the last time I slept two nights on a floor.

The first bedroom is my beautiful girl’s room.

I think they had fun in here today.  Going further down the hall you come to my boys’ room.

It isn’t that bad until you realize that might be a dirty pair of underwear and pull up from last night?!  I don’t know.  Maybe that is why they didn’t play with their toys in here today!?  Who knows, so we will just move along.

My room is next.  Here in the corner is my weekend bag and two pillows that are patiently waiting to be made into duvet covers for my new bed.

Beside my bed are bins that I keep throwing my consignment items in.  This week I have to price all my baby consignment sale items (this nowhere near all of it) to be ready to take to the sale next week.

My beautiful bed is unmade (like most days to be completely honest).

Going back down the hallway, you can turn to go into the kitchen instead of the livingroom.  You will see our newest family hobby along with all its necessities on the long counter, in the sitting area of the kitchen.

On the kitchen floor might be more sleeping bags, toys, and overnight bags.

This might be a good time to say that my awesome husband stayed home this weekend with Reagan.  He had to work some, so he stayed back and kept her.  She would have HATED this trip.  There was way too much time trapped in a van.  He picked the house up before we came home.  All these wonderful places were created this way today.  🙂

Do you get back from a trip and just need a day to decompress??  That was today for me.  We had a great day just laying low and “rediscovering” all our toys.

I did have one success from today.  I did four loads of laundry and folded them!  Now to just put them away at some point soon…

Yes, our washing machine and dryer are under the kitchen counters in the kitchen. 🙂  I love our little house and all its special “charm” and “characteristics”.

So, that was me being open and raw about our house.  I hope you enjoyed your tour and maybe you can relate to some of our mess!  I’m gonna go sit on the couch with my hubby and drink a beer…and just ignore the mess a little bit longer 🙂

How was YOUR day!?!?
