Creating as a form of Therapy!

January 16, 2022 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Creating has always been my therapy.
It was my safe outlet as I struggled to learn to read.
It was my “me time” growing up in a big family of 9 kids.
It was my way to decorate my home as a newly wed.
It was the way I held on to parts of me as a stay at home mom w/ 3 littles.
It was the way I began my business world…
🧡 what began as a DIY blog
🧡 led to an Etsy shop
🧡 which branched into art fairs
🧡 led to teaching ladies nights
🧡 grew into founding an art studio
🧡 pivoted back into an online store…that can now sell artist work once again.

[btw: How circular is this life!? Which makes me wonder why we always ask kids what they want to be or do when they grow up? Maybe they are already doing it now. They just need to grow and learn through it.]

The creative process is never finished. It’s a journey just like our lives. I hope I never feel stuck or like I arrived. I want to constantly be changing, growing and morphing.

It’s in the process…it’s in the journey…that is the art of life!

Handmade Gift Guide

December 17, 2013 By Erica Deuel 4 Comments

DIY_Handmade_giftsWhat is the most special gift you have ever received?

Was it something you had been wanting for a long time?

Was it a surprise that you weren’t expecting?

When I think of the gifts that have meant the most to me, it is gifts that show thought and effort. I love personal gifts that are a reflection of a time spent thinking of what I like, need, or enjoy. Sometimes these are bought gifts. For example, my sister-in-law bought me an appointment for a new hair-do this week, and I was so thrilled. She knew I had been wanting blue in my hair for a while. So thoughtful!

girl_Blue_hairA lot of my most special gifts are ones people have made me. I can think of the T-shirt quilt my mom made me as a high school graduation present using all of my favorite childhood shirts. I think of the stamp, business cards, and organizer book Matt made me for me first little craft company years ago. Handmade gifts can be some of the best. They show time and effort and can’t help but make you feel special.

I have rounded up some of my favorite crafts all in this one post. I think this collection of crafts would make great gifts are additions to gifts and stocking stuffers this holiday season. Christmas is a week away, and you have a weekend to get some stuff done. Imagine the joy you could bring someone in your life with one of these handmade gifts.

handmade_giftsI am busily trying to finish up a few gifts of my own. We have a week till Christmas! Let’s imagine the joy we can bring to someone by taking the time to create something especially for them.

Special Reminder: Coming in January, I will have packaged crafts for you to receive on your door step. This special membership will eliminate the hassle of having to find the supplies while providing the joy of a fun, seasonal craft to make as a gift or for your home. For more information, watch this video.

DIY Christmas Ball Ornaments

December 16, 2013 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

DIY_ornament_suppliesDoes your Christmas tree have a theme? My Christmas tree’s theme is “kid creations”. I am a sucker for all the cute handmade and picture ornaments. My kids paint or create several ornaments every year, and they are my favorite ones on my tree. If you saw my reindeer hands post, you got some tips on how to craft this season (and survive) with little ones. Here is a craft you can try out those tips. My Christmas Ball Ornaments are easy enough for a toddler to make.

Start with some ball-shaped ornaments. I used glass ornaments, but I would think plastic would work really well with this method as well. I cut up a bunch of tissue paper into about 1″ long squares or rectangles. I gave my kids some glue and showed them how you put a dab of glue on the ornament and then stick a piece of tissue paper on it, and let them run with the craft.

Making_ornamentsDIY_Paper_mache_ornamenttoddler_ornament_craftA full collage of paper tissues over lapping one another is ideal, but my J simply wanted to create a row of paper around his ornament and be done. That works too. Reagan used a Q-tip to apply the glue on her ornaments which was easier for her little hands than to squeeze the glue bottle like the boys opted to do.

Once my kids said they were done with their ornaments, I applied glue all over the outside of the tissue paper. This step pushed down all those fly away pieces sticking up and got them to lay flat on the ornament.

drying__crafted_ornamentsOnce the ornaments were dry, I sprayed them with my favorite clear shiny gloss spray from Rust-oleum. I love the shine that this spray added to our ornaments.

DIY_shiny_ornamentsThe last step was to add some string, ribbon, or embellishments to make them unique and special to you. I added bells and feathers and even a little star with the date to one of ours. Note: I did this step without the kids help. 🙂

DIY_christmas_ball_ornamentsOur ornaments were then done and ready to be given as gifts or hung on the tree! Soooo have you gotten to craft or make any presents yet? I hope you are able to unplug, relish in the normal simple things, and enjoy this season.

Happy week friends!!
