Their Hearts are Bigger than their Home

December 4, 2015 By Erica Deuel 1 Comment

kindness_matters to kidsHave you ever been in a moment where the reality of a major life change hits you? It may be your wedding day. It may be a graduation. Maybe it is the birth of a child. It could be the moment your best friend moves away. A new job. These are moments where we realize that life is changing. Sometimes we have a say in those moments and sometimes we don’t. What if you could help change some lives forever for GOOD?

Children in foster care have a chunk of my heart. I will never forget the feelings as we sat in our first training classes. I felt an awakening, as if I was on the brink of doing something I was always made to do. When I think of how I have been wired, there is a piece of me that just beats to be an advocate for these kids. They are innocent. So often their life has been messed up and they are merely the victims. They need hope. They need open arms. They need patience, grace, and a whole lot of love.

We recently said good-bye to the little boy we were loving on. He was with us for four months. When I look back on that experience, there are parts of me that can’t believe we did it. Fostering children is hard. You are dealing with hurting little people trying to make sense of a world that doesn’t make sense. More often than not you are showing them a new world. All they’ve known to be normal…is suddenly gone and there’s new faces in the picture.

It’s hard.

Then you add in appointments, therapies, visits, and numerous other things…it’s just hard. There are several faces that come to mind when I think of our experience, and they kept my head above water.

They saw the hurt in my eyes when I said I was ok.

They told me they were coming to help with the kids for the day.

They brought meals.

They sent me songs and verses.

They hugged me just a little tighter.

They let me cry and they cheered me on.

They watched my kids.

They gave me a playset.

They opened their homes to our craziness.

They cared for a sick one while we were in a hospital with another.

They kept calling me, when I stopped returning calls.

They were angels on earth.

What is often overlooked when thinking of foster care is it takes an army. You do not have to have a child actually live in your home to play a part in helping children in foster care. There are numerous other ways to help and make a difference. I will tell you from my experience, the people who are housing hurting kids…have a hard time asking for help, but they need it.

They need your support.

They need your eyes to see and heart to hear.

They need a break and they need advocates who understand.

These precious souls I call angels on earth. I would not have survived and been able to be in the trenches without help.

Just a little before we took our last boy in, my sister and her husband took in a little foster girl. They slowly learned she was one of five and have worked to get three of her other siblings reunited under their roof. Olivia and Cody are caring for their own two biological girls and now a sibling group of four. They have six kids 6-years-old and younger in their care. They are in the trenches and truly being the hands and feet of Christ.

feetThey need our help.

What was originally approved as an acceptable bedroom  placement and living situation has now been deemed not acceptable. They are a young couple. Their hearts are bigger than their home.

It is their heart’s desire to keep these kids united without having to be moved yet again…until it is time for them to go home. Weeks before Christmas, they are in jeopardy of being split up again and having to move and change schools a third time this semester.

A temporary living arrangement has been approved at their home with the understanding that they will start construction process to create an addition very soon. You can help us make this possible.

sing_renoWe can’t all take in a foster child, much less a sibling group of four to love as our own, but we can all help support those that do. These kids are on the brink of being split up. They can’t fight for life together on their own. We are their voice.

Albion Fit

June 16, 2014 By Erica Deuel 20 Comments

the prefect mom swimsuitSummer is in full swing and we are living at the neighborhood pool. How about you? Are you hitting the pool? Getting ready for the summer beach trip? Are you a mom with young kids?

If you are anything like me this is always that time of year that I stress about finding a good bathing suit for the season. For me I prefer something modest, that I feel good in, and can’t be pulled down while kids are climbing all over me… It’s a pretty daunting combination to find. I have purchased and taken back no less than four bathing suits already this year. 🙁

But don’t worry, there’s hope! I found the most amazing bathing suit from Albion Fit. It is absolutely my favorite suit in a very long time. It is modest yet beautiful, and the best part is I don’t feel like an old mom in it! As I now have my first suit from Albion, my love for this company is just growing as is my wish list. Their pieces are fashionable and unique, but more importantly practical and technical. There are so many cute suits, but they also carry workout gear. Here are a few of my favorite suits. Note: click each image to be taken to that suit on their site.icon_red2

You are Loved

May 21, 2014 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Friends, you are loved! In this great big world, the internet can bring us together and make it so small. I have met so many beautiful souls on the web that I am blessed to now call friends.

I truly believe God brings people into our lives to encourage us and lift us up. One of the most beautiful spirits I have met is my sweet friend Annette. She is crafty and so talented. I love all her pieces. You really must check out her store, The Rustic Orange.

lovedturq

She creates prints, signs, and so many other cute things that will have you swooning, but more importantly is her heart. She is beautiful inside and out and has one of the biggest hearts I know. This is her print, You are Loved. She has so generously offered it as a free printable to you all.

Please click here to download her free, colorful print.

Life is so short. We are so blessed to have the ability to love others and leave our mark by our actions. I pray that today that you know you are loved by a heavenly father that created you. Have a blessed day!

Spring Spoonful Lab Recap

May 5, 2014 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

craft_party_roomDo you know the feeling of when you dream, plan, and prepare for something for so long and then it’s over?

Part of you is relieved. Part of you may be sad. A lot of you might be tired. BUT, through it all you have a really happy high that you are proud of what you accomplished. I have been dreaming of hosting a Spoonful Lab in my house ever since I dreamed up the idea of hosting craft days last fall.

It’s no secret I love to create and help inspire others to do the same. I feel like if we use our imaginations and try new things, we can create beautiful things for less, and the process of creating can teach us so much. The blog allows me to do a lot of this, but hosting craft days where I can love on, poor in, get to know, and relate with fellow crafters and new friends in person!? That is a side of this whole blogging/business that just lights a fire in me. I love it. Until it is possible to bring you all to my house, I will still take my crafts to you through this blog and my Spoonful Tribe craft kits.

swag bagsWe started the day with my awkward intro/welcome (someday I will be able to nail one of these, but it hasn’t happened yet…luckily most everyone had a drink and pretty swag presents from me in hand as they listened ;)) and making two embroidered hoops. I demonstrated how I make mine, laid out a bunch of fun embellishments and my sewing machine and let everyone get their craft on.

craft_dayIt was so fun to see girls meeting, relating, and encouraging one another in such a short period. I love how these events bring crafting and being relational together. Too of my favorite things! It was so fun to see how some girls put their own spin on something I have created or go totally in their own direction!

I love seeing the originality and creativity come alive! I learn so much from being around other creative people. This was one inspiring day!craft_party_creations

oh_happy_day

heart_embroidery_hoopAfter making embroidery hoops, we ate lunch and then made some screen print type pillowcases. I loved everyone’s pillowcase! I had a third craft, but we didn’t even get to it. Everyone took it go. I was so happy to see everyone felt comfortable enough to go at their own pace, create what they wanted…and even felt comfortable to get down on my floor to craft!

craft party

crafty_friendsI am already dreaming of the next Spoonful Lab. I’m researching and pricing out the supplies I want to use. As soon as I have more information, I will be sure to let you all know. Until then, would you like some of my Swag!?
