The Encanto, Madrigal’s House Craft For Kids

February 20, 2022 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Has Encanto been on repeat at your house too!? My Reagan has easily seen the movie over a dozen times. If we are honest though, I love it too.

A movie about family, gifts, color, helping others, culture, and community is a magical mix! We’ve listened to the soundtrack, watched the movie and now crafted to its theme! If you’re a fan of it too, we’d love to share an inspirational project for your Encanto loving artist!

If you treat this project like the movie’s theme, “the miracle is not some magic that you’ve got, the miracle is you”, than you will have a blast. Gather some supplies and have fun!

It’s not what you have that will make it amazing.

It’s the process and using what you have to bring you and your artists’ ideas to life!

It’s no secret that I love to use what supplies we have on hand. The creative process should not be expensive. So gather some basic supplies that are close to what is pictured or listed below and then we will tap into that imagination!

Supplies:

  • base house shape (we used a wood sign board we already had)
  • paint
  • paintbrushes
  • scrap paper, foam sheets, cardboard
  • glue or mod podge
  • scissors

The first step is to paint your house! The Madrigal house is really colorful and several floors, so we picked three bright colors of paint and used each one to represent a different floor of the house.

Our house is a little more narrow then the Madrigal house in the movie, but it is the type of board we had on hand. If your house is wider, than you may be even able to add more windows and details in this next step than we were able to add.

The next step is to cut and glue scrap papers to create a roof and overhang details to the different floors.

We did three different styles of roofs and simply glued the papers in place on the painted boarder seem between the floors.

The final step is in all the details! Add as many layers of paper you want to make your magical house pop! We added trees, windows, flowers, and then drew in a magical candle.

Use your imagination and create as many details as you want to add!

We were inspired by the Madrigal house, but now you are making your own magic house. There is no right or wrong. This is your moment to take an inspiration and play with the process!

Have fun and make the project your own! Do you have supplies that we didn’t mention? Break them out and see what you can do when you experiment and use your imagiantion!

We had so much fun creating and playing with color!

What do you think? Do you know an artist who would love to make their own Encanto House? Go on a scavenger hunt around your house to collect some supplies. You can do this! You just need a few things, an imagination, and a little time!

**Local friends, we will be releasing this fun project as a creative kit in our online store THIS Friday! If you don’t want to gather the supplies, let us do the work and grab the kit from us.

Summer Reading for the Little Ones (& busy ones)

June 11, 2015 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Disney_story_centralWe are only a week into summer, but already loving it! We worked so hard on so many new concepts this school year. As a homeschool mom, I am especially proud of completing another year. Since I teach my kids all year, getting the kids to read during the summer and not feel like they are doing “school” can be tricky. My kids love earning electronic time, and I can play into their love for electronics, by using Disney Story Central.

Disney Story Central is the largest collection of Disney digital stories, featuring a wide array of Disney stories and characters that kids and families know and love.

I can have the best of both worlds by sharpening their love for reading while also allowing them to have some screen time.

disney_books_onlineThe computer doesn’t always make sense for reading. When we are on the go or want to all cuddle up in a more comfy location, we can turn to our iPad. I love that this program can be played on both.

I let my kids pick which books they would like to read from Disney Story Central from our computer. I love that it is a cross-platform experience. Disney Story Central is available via iPhone and iPad app, tablet-optimized website and Video on Demand (AT&T U-Verse).

Disney_story_central_onlineOne of my favorite features of this program is the customizable bookshelves for each member of the family. With a soon to be third grader and first grader, my boys are on different reading levels and they can get personalized reading recommendations for the level they need.

When we were selecting some books, I kept in mind my little Reagan. She’s in preschool and loves to read books! With each book there is the option to read it aloud or have it read aloud to you. She could sit for hours and have these books read to her. She loves it!

Disney_story_central_review

snuggle_buddiesDisney Story Central gives families the freedom to choose the reading experience that suits them best, whether through an annual subscription service (unlimited access to the expansive library) or a-la-carte options, using Disney Book Tokens. The Disney book token system works like currency and allows parents to give their kids the opportunity to pick out the books they WANT to read.

My kids love picking out books to read. They sort through, compare, talk about the characters and their favorite parts of the different stories. Reading is so important and starting a fun way to do it as a kid will hopefully create a lifetime love for reading in them.

kids_books_onlineYou can participate in Disney Story Central‘s ‘Mid-Summer Light Reads’ Campaign. The campaign will promote weekly summer reading themes featuring selected Disney titles. By participating you can unlock free books and enter a special sweepstakes! Launching today, June 11, the campaign will run through August 13.

How do you encourage your kids to read during the summer? Thanks so much for stopping by!

DIY Minnie Mouse Silhouette

April 26, 2013 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

It’s crazy we are finally at the weekend where everything is happening! We will be closing on both houses and moving in the next few days. It is so exciting!

I want to give you a quick DIY project you could do over the weekend.

DIY minnie mouse silhouette

In my post about Reagan’s dresser makeover with Disney paint, I showed a few decor items I have made to help decorate her room. One of those decor items was this simple Minnie Mouse Silhouette. It was such a quick and easy project that you could knock out quickly! Here are the series of steps to do, so you too can create one of these subtle but fun Minnie Mouse vintage signs.

1. Find an old piece of wood.

2. Sand the wood really good on the sides and top. This will lessen the cause of splinters and make it look more finished.

3. Find bowls that look proportional to the size of Minnie’s head and ears.

Be sure to follow me on twitter and instagram to get pics and updates of the whole moving process and sneak peeks of Reagan’s room getting pulled together. I hope you have a great weekend, and I will try to post again soon!

Paint That Captures the Magic and Inspiration of Disney

April 3, 2013 By Erica Deuel 10 Comments

I don’t know about your house, but around here Disney is a huge hit. If you’ve followed along for a while, you’ve seen a number of posts where I’m sharing the influence of a Disney character or movie. We’ve had the opportunity to visit both Disneyland and Disney World with the kids, and it truly is the most magical place on earth! As an organization they are just so creative and inspiring to me. So, when I was introduced to a new paint line created by Disney I could not have been more excited!

When I was asked to review the paint, I totally flipped out! What an honor!

Here’s the scoop: Disney has partnered with Glidden to create Disney Paint, a new line of paints exclusively available at Wal-mart. They have 112 colors and five innovative specialty finishes that are easy to use and apply. It’s a premium quality and ultra-durable paint that was created with kids in mind. It’s made to withstand wear and tear, as well as repeated scrubs and washes.

As most of you know, we have sold our house and will be moving into our new home soon! While our new house is beautiful, the paint is very basic.

Little Girls Bedroom Makeover

That doesn’t work for me. Color, lots of color, is sort of a big deal to me. To ensure I don’t go too crazy, I’m limiting myself to one room at a time. My daughter Reagan gets the privilege of having her room be the first to be redesigned. So, I headed to Wal-mart to see what Disney Paint had to offer.

Picking out Disney Paint

The first thing that hit me was the depth and variety of choices. There were so many beautiful colors to choose from.  Disney Paint has a distinct collection of colors grouped into palettes designed to give you a lot of options. Because Reagan is only two-years-old, I did the majority of the color choosing. However, if you had an older child I think the display they have created would be very easy and fun to get your child involved in the selections.

Now, if you’ve shopped for other paint colors,  you probably remember seeing the paint chips being arranged by colors. All the blues are together, all the reds are together, all the greens are together, etc. With the Disney Paint display, the colors are arranged by complementary collections. So if you find picking colors and matching accents difficult, this display makes it a very simple process.

The other thing that really stood out to me was that Disney Paint goes beyond just a selection of colors. They have five specialty finishes to add some extra magic to your paint project. I picked two fun colors out for the majority of Reagan’s walls, but I still wanted to try a fun, specialty finish.  While the glitter finishes were very tempting, I decided to go with a chalkboard option for one of Reagan’s walls. A black chalkboard wall? What’s so special about that, you ask? I’ll tell you, it doesn’t have to be black! The chalkboard paint can be tinted in 20 different colors. How cool is that!?

Aside from the specialty finishes, Wal-mart also carries Disney bedding and Disney room accessories that go right along with the color palettes.  I’m so excited to create Reagan a new room that she will love. It will be complete with a toddler bed and everything. No more crib.

We’ve started packing for our move, and the first box I packed is my new Disney Paint! I can’t wait until we can call our new house “home” and I can start to add some magic and inspiration to Reagan’s new room. I will of course keep you posted on the progress and let you know what I think of the paint once I get to work!
