The Creative Process Can Teach Us Life Lessons!

August 22, 2022 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Hello friends,

However today is going, I hope in this little moment, of this post popping into your day, it brings a smile to your face -or just the feeling of being seen. Life can be oh so hard. After sewing dozens and dozens of cards last week, I had this thought how all the cards were layered with so many colors and different movements. The stitching was not perfect and each card had little quirks all over. Yet, when I step back, I see how beautiful the finished cards are all together. Our lives can be seen like that too.

Life can be heavy, hard and also light and whimsical. We have awkward bends in the journey, yet this is OUR life to live.

In being real, it has already been a Monday over here. I recently read that “we” as a people group are in transition. One month last summer, 4 million people quit their jobs. Wow. I’m not the only one trying to figure out what’s next. It’s a messy place to be. I often turn to creating and creating with my family to ease the thought sorting and help me find a refreshed perspective.

What about you?

This past weekend our Jeremiah finally launched his YouTube channel. He’s been asking for a while, but it just now became the right time. Hearing him dream, laugh, and process what could make others laugh was so fun.

We don’t have to be perfect and have things all figured out to have beautiful lives. We just need to keep moving and I’d also say keep DREAMING. One step at a time.

The creative process can teach us powerful life lessons like how our point of view can impact how things turn out. Check out this short reel where I walk you through this thought.

So, wherever today is hitting you, get out and create. The process will be so good for your mind and heart!

If you happen to need a colorful heart to help yours, use one of mine.

Beauty in the Unexpected

August 27, 2020 By Erica Deuel Leave a Comment

Isn’t it fun when something unplanned catches your eye? I think there is beauty in the unexpected.

The other week I showed you how I made these messy painted journals. I began by showing you how I made their covers, but I ended up filling them up with color too. The goal was to fill the pages with color and inspiring pops of playful abstract paint strokes. What I did not expect was the papers that I used to insert between my journal pages to become their own beautiful canvas. These papers were intended to simply catch the paint that rolled off the current page I was painting. I wanted them to catch paint from oozing below and hurting past pages I had painted.

The papers dried as the pages dried. I then moved them up and inserted them in between new pages, as I kept filling my journal with color. What happened in the process was layers and layers of paint filling up and creating fun abstract mini paintings.

I started to love the pages. All of a sudden I didn’t want them to get ruined, and I contemplated stopping to use them and get new papers, so I didn’t “mess them up.”

I forced myself to keep going and remain free in their creation as well, because ultimately I had no need or plan for them. I should just enjoy the process with them as well.By the time I finished my journals, I had this stack of papers that I found so beautiful and loved as much as the journals. I cut them up into smaller sections and planned to use them as cards or bookmarks.

I couldn’t leave it there though. I got the idea to add more texture and fun to create some really fun, messy, painted, rainbow greeting cards.

I started following some of the trails of paint by ripping the edge to create a rough textured finish. I loved this look because the white contrasts with all that color so beautifully. Once I had a stack of now ripped mini abstract paintings, I picked a blank, colorful greeting card and sewed my painting to it. The result was a fun, textured, colorful, messy (yet finished) greeting card. What do you think? Do you love them as much as I do?

I think one of the things I love about them is just that they came out of nothing. There was no idea or plan. They just unfolded as I created and enjoyed the art process.

When is a time you found beauty in an unexpected way? Enjoy the process! We never know what may come out of it!

Moved!

May 1, 2013 By Erica Deuel 5 Comments

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Minted. All words and opinions are 100% mine.

We have moved! Can you believe it? I scarcely can myself. What an emotionally long roller coaster, but it was worth it. We closed on both houses last weekend, and we are now sitting in our beautiful new home. I have a permanent smile on my face.

We couldn’t have done this without the love and support of family, friends, and so many of you. The hours given, muscles used, love on our kids, and encouraging words have helped carry us to today. Thank you!

Saying goodbye is always hard. It was hard to say goodbye to a home we loved and experienced so much life in.

In contrast, saying hello to a new place is so exciting and fun. We had a whirlwind of emotions this past weekend, but I am proud that we let ourselves process and feel them all.

Through this process of moving, it might sound silly, but I was excited to experience everything. From picking out the house to decluttering and moving, I wanted to experience it. One of the things I was excited about was being able to get moving announcements. No joke.

I was introduced to Minted through this process, and fell in love with this online store. Minted sells the most beautiful paper creations. I have been drooling over all their moving announcements but they sell every kind of stationary. They have business cards, invitations, greeting cards, art prints, and even wedding invitations.

Matt and I made our wedding invitations, and if we had to do it over again, we certainly would not do that. I would have given anything to have had such beautiful and creative options with the simplicity Minted provides.

I love that Minted is made up of a vast collection of independent designers. There is so much creativity and array of styles to choose from.

I had a hard time choosing which beautiful design I would go with, but I ended up with the Flower Patch design for my moving announcement.

There really are so many beautiful things to choose from on Minted. They have more than just the stationary. There are party décor items and they even have an eye candy section where you can browse their inspiration boards. You should check them out. I have been so impressed with their costumer service and turn around on my order. You will love them!

To learn more, visit Minted online or connect with them more on Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.

Thank you so much for checking in on the status of our move, and I hope to be back soon!
