DIY Washi Tape Display

May 15, 2014 By Erica Deuel 6 Comments

diy_washi_tape_displayDoes gold make you swoon?

I see so many pictures on the web of the gold trend. They are all so beautiful. Stunning, gorgeous prints, figurines, pillows, pots, etc all shining bright. They seem so happy. These pictures make me love the idea of gold…and want to try to incorporate it, but I just can’t.

I love color too much. No matter how much I try, if I find something gold, I end up painting it. My latest items to makeover were these pretty gold candlesticks.

gold_candle_stickI found these beauties at the thrift store for around $1.00 each. I love the shape, the metal, and the designs. I kept one gold for a little while, but when I found more for my collection, I ended up spray painting all of them with my favorite paint.

rustoleum_spray_paintWhen Rustoleum has so many beautiful colors, it is hard to keep things gold for me. After I spray painted my candle sticks, I pulled out one of our butter knives and did a little widdling as I shaved away the ends of candles so they would fit down in the candlesticks.

shaving_candle_stickOnce my candles were in my new colorful candlesticks, I stuck my washi tape on the candles. I love it! I love the color of the candlesticks with the fun patterns and colors of the washi tape. I use this stuff so often. It is fun to have it displayed and act as a decoration to enjoy.

washi_tape_displayNow, I can enjoy looking at my washi tape as much as I enjoy using it. This might be a slight excuse to make sure my collection stays stocked well. 🙂

I have a beginner question…do you sand the candlesticks before spray painting them? Or do you just start spraying? Thanks

I didn’t sand them…but I did do three light coats. If you do too heavy a coat…it will cause the paint to run and streak. Usually if you are spray painting like this to metal, if the paint doesn’t take real good the first spray…it will in the second spray. good luck!! Xo, Erica
